Appropriate use of both basic ANOVA and its more advanced versions depends on data meeting the assumptions associated with the test. Those assumptions typically include whether the data are normally distributed and the group variances are homogeneous. Other assumptions may include that all factors are fixed and that they are independent.

For example, suppose a researcher wanted to examine the exercise habits of individuals according to their age. Three age groupings had been identified, and television-watching habits would be recorded over a period of time. The use of ANOVA enables the researcher to compare the outcome measure—exercise habits—among the three age groups.
