Bibliography (Other Major Assignment)

  • Observe all of the normal formatting requirements for papers—double-space with one-inch margins. 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
  • DON’T skip extra lines between entries.
  • Use hanging indents, which are essentially the opposite of normal paragraphs. That is, start your first line for an entry all the way left and indent every subsequent line of that entry one tab (see example). Due this by selecting “hanging,” though, not manually.
  • Remember, just for this bibliography, to include every source that you consulted (every article you read, not necessarily every article you glanced at). When you write the paper’s Works Cited page, though, it will only include sources mentioned in the paper (six sources are required in paper; this should have eight, I would imagine).
  • Use “Article Accessed through a Database” (p. 526) from your text as a model for articles obtained through EBSCOhost. Begin with the name (last name, first) of the author of each individual article. Follow that with the article’s name in quote marks. Next is the name of the journal from which it comes; make this in italics rather than underlined, as the most recent version of the MLA Handbook ceases to use underlining and instead uses italics.
  • Your list of entries is alphabetized by the first word in each entry, which is usually the last name of the author (unless there isn’t one).
  • A sample entry would be as follows:

Tannen, Deborah.  “Taking a ‘War of Words’ Too Literally.”  The Economist, vol. 32, no. 3, 2009, pp. 32-39.  EBSCOhost, http://web.a.ebscohost.com.gary.libproxy.ivytech.edu.allstate.libproxy.ivytech.edu/

APA Papers:

  • Observe all of the normal formatting requirements for papers—double-space with one-inch margins. 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
  • DON’T skip extra lines between entries.
  • Use hanging indents, which are essentially the opposite of normal paragraphs. That is, start your first line for an entry all the way left and indent every subsequent line of that entry one tab (see example).
  • Remember, just for this bibliography, to include every source that you consulted. When you write the paper’s References page, though, it will only include sources mentioned in the paper (six sources are required).
  • Use “Article Available Only through a Database” (p. 571) as a model for anything found in the library’s databases. Notice that if there is a DOI, it is included in place of the “Retrieved from” part. Use whatever other appropriate model for other source types. Begin with the name (last name, first initial) of the author of each individual article. Follow that with the date of publication in parentheses. Next is the article’s name without quote marks, only capitalizing the first word of the title and subtitle as well as any proper nouns. The name of the journal is next and should be italicized as well as capitalized normally, followed by volume (italicized) and issue number (in parentheses, not italics) as well as pages. Last is the web site’s address (URL) or the database name for library sources.
  • Your list of entries is alphabetized by the first word in each entry, which is usually the last name of the author (unless there isn’t one).
  • A sample entry would be as follows:

Katz, D. (2010 March). The case for natural foods. Prevention, 62(3), 124-127. Retrieved from Health Source—Consumer Edition database
