Health Promotion Proposal, Part 1
Exercise Instructions
Health Promotion Proposal, Part 1
Description
Over the duration of this course, you will submit a scholarly PowerPoint “Health Promotion Program Proposal,”
addressing existing nursing knowledge related to health promotion and a written proposal.
In the written proposal, you will also develop a health promotion program to meet the health needs of a vulnerable
population in your potential concentration area or community. The PowerPoint portion is your presentation of that proposal.
The proposal must demonstrate graduate school-level writing and critical analysis. The final version of
your proposal is due in week 8.
For this assignment you will submit Part One of your proposal, detailing a health problem that is
prevalent within your selected group and demonstrating your research of health promotion strategies for
addressing this specific health problem. At this point, you already developed in your discussions the core ideas of the topic contained in this assignment. You will use the same information, but it won’t be a copy-and-paste exercise. The purpose is that you enhance your ideas with the comments and outcomes of the weekly discussions and previous evaluations.
Directions
1. Introduction. Describe the health problem. Don't type "Introduction". (1 paragraph at least).
Using data and statistics, support your claim that the issue you selected is a problem.
What specifically will you address in your proposed health promotion program?
Be sure your proposed outcome is realistic and measurable.
2. Describe the vulnerable population. (1-3 paragraphs).
What are the risk factors that make this a vulnerable population?
Use evidence to support the risk factors you have identified.
3. Provide a review of literature from scholarly journals (at least 2) of evidence-based interventions that address the problem. (2 paragraphs, one for each article).
After completing a literature search related to effective interventions for your chosen health promotion activity, write a review that evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of all the sources you have found. (2-3 paragraphs).
4. Select and present an appropriate health promotion/disease prevention theoretical or conceptual model that best serves as the guiding framework for the proposal. (2-3 paragraphs).
For this assignment, a conclusion paragraph is not required.

Mental Disorders
Mental illnesses are a significant public health issue for millions of individuals around the world. These illnesses, characterized by disruptions of cognition, emotional functioning, or behavior, have serious impacts on the health and lifestyle of the affected. Mental illnesses range from depression and anxiety to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and all of them have a tremendous burden on health systems, societies, and individuals. Prevention and intervention are effective for mental illnesses, but access remains a significant issue. This paper addresses the global, country-level, and local burden of mental illnesses with evidence from statistics and highlights the call for integrated health promotion strategies.
International Significance
Mental illness is a global health issue with about one in every eight individuals suffering from it, and it totals about 970 million people as of 2019. An anxiety disorder affects 301 million individuals, and depression affects 280 million individuals (World Health Organization, 2022). It has escalated with a 26% increase in anxiety disorders and a 28% rise in major depressive disorders in one year. Schizophrenia affects about 24 million individuals, with affected individuals losing 10-20 years of their life expectancy as compared to the general population. Bipolar disorder affects about 40 million individuals, with affected individuals experiencing severe mood disturbances (World Health Organization, 2024). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent in areas of armed conflict, while eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa afflict 14 million individuals globally. With the availability of psychological and pharmacological interventions for mental illness, many affected individuals experience discrimination, stigma, and lack of access to appropriate care. Healthcare systems around the world are under-resourced, with tremendous gaps in the provision of care.
National Significance
Mental illnesses are a critical American public health issue. About one in five U.S. adults (about 57.8 million) experiences a mental illness every year, NIMH reports. Further, 40 million American adults experience anxiety disorders, and the most common is major depressive disorder. It impacts over 21 million adults and causes significant disability and lost productivity (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023). Roughly 2.8% of U.S. adults experience bipolar disorder, and about 1% experience schizophrenia (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022). PTSD is also common among veterans, impacting around 7% of the U.S. population at some time. Mental illness costs the United States economy about $300 billion each year in the form of lost productivity, healthcare costs, and disability payments. Despite advances in mental healthcare, disparities persist among racial and ethnic minorities, the uninsured, and individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Suicide, as a consequence of untreated mental illness, is a top killer in the U.S., with more than 48,000 recorded in 2021.
Local relevance
At the local level, mental health disparities remain prevalent throughout communities. In Florida, with 2.9 million adults suffering from mental illness, 39% of them are receiving care, with significant barriers to care being reported (Clark, 2024). It is one of the lowest states for per-capita mental health funding, making issues of access to necessary services even more complicated. Hispanic and Black populations in Florida have greater rates of mental health issues but fewer mental health services due to financial challenges, stigma, and language barriers. Youth mental health issues are also increasing with suicide as the second most common cause of death for ages 10-24 in the state. Local initiatives such as school-based mental health programs and community outreach programs are trying to meet the gap in mental health services. Disparities remain, with greater investment in mental health infrastructure and awareness campaigns being necessary to promote early intervention and treatment.
Justification for Health Promotion Strategies
Mental illness is a significant global burden, and hence, comprehensive health promotion is necessary. Mental health promotion has to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and improve access to evidence-based treatment. International organizations like the WHO encourage the integration of mental health services into primary care for equal access. Parity for mental health must be addressed through policy, more funding for mental health treatment is necessary, and community-based care needs to be promoted. At the local level, there must be more school mental health expansion, more outreach to underserved communities, and broader funding for telehealth. Disparities in mental health can be eliminated to enhance well-being, decrease the mental illness burden, and help people with mental disorders.
