Module 3 Discussion Question

Due on Oct 11, 2026 11:59 PM

Ends Oct 11

Group/section restrictions.

INITIAL POST:

For this discussion. I am looking for a college-level response to the question below that goes beyond surface level. I am also evaluating your answer for evidence that you read and watched the assigned materials. Here's the question:

In Module 3, there were several examples of the positive actions humans can and have taken to reduce overpopulation or invasive species or to avoid the "Tragedy of the Commons". Which example or concept from our assigned readings struck you as the most interesting or profound, and why?

RESPONSE POST:

Once you have made your initial post, respond in a meaningful way to at least two classmates' posts.

Respond to this

The example that stood out to me the most from Module 3 was marine protected areas and how they can help prevent the “Tragedy of the Commons.” I thought this was interesting because if everyone keeps taking as many fish as they want, fish populations can decrease and eventually hurt everyone who depends on them. MPAs can give fish populations a chance to recover while still allowing people to fish in other areas. I also thought the example about China’s overseas fishing was surprising. China reported catching about 368,000 tons of fish per year, but researchers estimated the actual amount could have been around 4.6 million tons. This shows how overfishing can be an even bigger problem than we realize. I think Module 3 showed that humans can make changes to protect ecosystems without completely stopping people from using natural resources. Things like MPAs and sustainable fishing can help protect biodiversity and make sure these resources are still available in the future.
