Reflection is the process of making meaning from your experience and engaging in intentional critical thinking. We hope this reflection activity will help you explore and process what you’ve learned, including considering factors that may have influenced your success. These metacognition activities build skills that will help you in your future clinical work.
"Why so much reflection?" you might be asking. "How can I be graded on something I feel?"
Deep reflection, like many other skills, comes more easily to some students than to others based on how much practice they've had. Deep reflection isn't just about our feelings—our feelings are absolutely fine, whatever they may be. Rather, reflection is about thinking about our feelings—sorting through them and our experiences—and seeing what there is to learn from them. It uses metacognition, which is thinking about how we think. Reflection is a skill, just like suturing or writing or talking with patients, and it's one we can get better at with practice. You may find this resource helpful for learning more about reflection and improving your reflection skills. For those interested, here is information about metacognition and its role in learning: https://tll.mit.edu/teaching-resources/how-people-learn/metacognition/Links to an external site. What reflection is not: reiterating course principles or ideas without processing or individualizing them. Please don't tell us what you think we want to hear. We don't actually want to hear that.... because it's not useful for your growth as a clinician. Generally, you get out of reflection what you put into it, and the rewards can be big.In other words.....(and yes, this IS from The Princess and the Frog) "You gotta dig a little deeper....find out who you are You gotta dig a little deeper... it really ain't that far When you find out who you are, you'll find out what you need Blue skies and sunshine, guaranteed." -Jennifer Lewis**************************************************************************************************************************************
