Adopting and implementing software systems is a major strategic activity for IT leaders. Evaluating the success and failure of past implementations can benefit today’s manager by bringing to light potential issues and challenges. A major trend in software systems over the last decade is the growth of open source software. These systems are generally free to use, but may not include the same levels of implementation support and ongoing support of commercial applications.

Read the following case concerning the adoption of open source software adoption in the public sector of Australia.

• How can these experiences inform the decision-making of other businesses that are evaluating the implementation of these type of systems?
