The Form.

When visually analyzing a work of art the second component that you will examine is the works Form. 

This is also called the works Formal Elements or Formal Qualities.  The Form is made up of The Elements of Art and The Principles of Design.  You will go over these in your book in chapter 3 – 7.  You can also learn more about The Elements of Art and Principles of Design in my Lecture in the Lecture Notes sections of the class.  

For this assignment I would like for you to choose a work of art  made before 1850.  Please identify the work (title, artist, medium and year) and discuss 2 formal elements of the work. 

For example you could talk about the works Color and the works Composition.  Or you could choose to discuss the works Contrast and the works Texture.   You have many options listed in chapters 3 – 7. 

It can be difficult to talk about the formal elements.  It can be hard to describe in words what you see with your eyes.  Luckily in chapters 3 – 7 there are a lot of vocabulary words that will help you.  You will find them in both bold and italic type.
