- Make sure you have watched the film 12 Angry Men. It is recommended that you have a seating chart identifying the characters in the movie so you can take notes while you watch the movie.
- Read Chapters 3, 5 and 8 in the text. Specific parts of those chapters will help you apply course concepts in your analysis of the film.
- Write a four-page (minimum) analysis paper that answers the following questions, using specific examples from the film and support from the text:
- Use the Tuckman model of group development presented in Chapter 3 to describe the life cycle or stages of development for the group of jurors. Refer to specific behaviors and comments from the film and specify how they illustrate that stage of group development.
- Using the "roles" lists in Chapter 5 (in Communicating in small groups), identify the group task roles, group building and maintenance roles, and individual roles of each characters from the film. For example, did you observe one character who was a "self-confessor"? Describe what he said or did that supports your statement.
- Use the material in chapter 8 to help you answer these questions. Identify both the sources of conflict and each characters conflict style. Be sure to specify what verbal and nonverbal behavior you observe that leads you to conclude that the person uses an accommodating, avoiding, compromising, competing, or collaborative style. As you decide which conflict style an individual uses, note Figure 8.1 and the concern for self and concern for others shown by the character.
