The scope of your IT project will determine the level of data access required and the associated data storage needs. Data used in multisite projects will require IRB oversight and often require the execution of a DUA if transferring data outside of the institution or receiving data from another institution.

Identifying and assembling an adequate project team is based on the needs of the project. At a minimum, you will need to include frontline staff that will use the product, a data analyst capable of completing the ETL process on the data, and potentially statisticians to conduct appropriate model building and outcomes analyses.

All projects require review and potential revision over time. Follow-up and review of implemented programs should be included in the initial planning stages and resource allocation decisions at project inception.

You are a new manager on your Heart Failure/Cardiac step-down unit and have high hopes for your floor.

Identify several IT projects that you as the nurse manager of a nursing unit could develop to support the operations of the nursing floor to promote compliance with daily weights for your HF patients.

Introduction

Daily weights are one of the simplest yet most important assessments for patients with heart failure. As a nurse manager on a cardiac step-down unit, I see daily weight compliance as both a clinical responsibility and a workflow issue that can be improved through leadership, communication, and practical use of technology.

Information Technology Projects to Support Daily Weight Compliance

The first IT project would focus on adding basic EHR prompts that remind nurses to obtain and record daily weights during routine charting. The second project would involve creating a simple tracking view that allows me to review compliance patterns on the unit without relying on manual audits. The third project would explore the use of automated scales that send weight data directly into the EHR to reduce missed or delayed documentation.

Data Analysis Approaches and the Role of Advanced Analytics

For this quality improvement effort, data review would begin with simple comparisons of compliance rates over time. Although artificial intelligence tools exist, they are not necessary at this stage and would likely require more resources than are reasonable for a single nursing unit.

Importance of Health Data Literacy for Nurse Leaders

Nurse leaders must understand basic data concepts in order to make sense of reports and guide staff effectively. Without data literacy, it becomes difficult to explain why changes are needed or to evaluate whether an intervention is truly working.
