Asian history discussion

In the beginning, the Mongols were a small, unimportant group of nomadic clans.  Suddenly, they stormed the world conquering all before them (except Japan!), including establishing rule over China.  What happened?  How do you explain their success?  What was the impact of the Mongols on China, Korea, and Japan?
