Corporation Selection

Meta Platforms, Inc.

Meta Platforms, Inc. will be the focus of this report. With its large market capitalization, Meta Platforms, Inc. is one of the largest companies by market capitalization and is within the top public technology companies. The reason why Meta's user base is so massive is because the company's three primary businesses, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp (Meta Platforms, Inc., 2026), already have millions of users

This report will focus on Meta because of the courses focused on law, business and politics. For one, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Facebook in its case against the tech giant for allegedly buying Instagram and WhatsApp to create a monopoly. This suit has raised significant issues under the Sherman and Clayton Acts about the concentration of the market. This provides a good overview of antitrust laws to help with the analysis of the case.

Second, Meta is subjected to ongoing ethical challenges relating to data privacy, algorithmic content moderation, and the psychological impact of its platforms on minors, all of which have implications for data protection regulations, including state-level social media laws and international data protection agreements like the General Data Protection Regulation (Barreno-Alcalde et al., 2026). Such conflicts are a good example of the conflicting interests of the profit motive of business and social responsibility, a theme that is central to this course.

Third, Meta is well-positioned politically. It's an excellent case study of a single corporation interacting with all three aspects of analysis this project has: legal, ethical and political.

I think I'll not have any trouble at all finding a current, substantive article in Week 5 that is about a particular legal, ethical, or political issue that is raised in relation to Meta, because there's so much going on in the business world as well as in the legal, ethical, and political arenas.
