FORMAT

  • How long should Essay 2 be? Essay 2 is made up of three paragraphs: a brief introductory paragraph, a summary paragraph, and a thoroughly developed rhetorical analysis paragraph that follows the MEAL plan and other closed-form prose conventions. Generally, an effective MEAL plan paragraph for a rhetorical analysis will be 400-500 words long. The brief introductory paragraph can be accomplished in around 100 words, maybe more. And the summary paragraph can be accomplished in 150-200 words, considering the brevity of the texts.
  • How should you format your essay? For now, you only need to do the following:
    • Indent the first line of each paragraph
    • Use 11- to 12-point Times New Roman or Calibri font
    • Double-space between lines
    • Include a title that captures your main idea; center this title at the top of your essay

CONTENT

  • What is required in the introductory paragraph?
    • Your opening paragraph should orient your readers to the who, what, where, when, and why of your text:
      • The text's title, author/speaker and credentials, publisher (if applicable) and any relevant info about the publisher, such as its political slant and its funder
      • The date published or delivered
      • The context surrounding the text: what event or circumstances prompted the text?
  • What is required in the summary paragraph?
    • In every sentence,
      • use attributive tags to attribute the ideas to the author:
        • use the author's last name or he/she
        • use precise signal verbs (see Step 4 in Lesson 1 for a list of signal verbs),
      • use transitions and other signposts to show the relationship between the ideas, capturing the structure and flow of the source's ideas,
      • represent the source's ideas accurately, fairly, objectively, and comprehensively yet concisely.
  • What is required in the body paragraphs?
    • Your body paragraphs must meet these requirements and apply these skills and strategies:
      • Apply the MEAL Plan paragraphing strategy for effective development and structure
        • It must present one main idea that makes a claim about how the author/speaker appeals to either ethos OR logos OR pathos(unless you have a main idea that appropriately and effectively explores more than one appeal)
        • It must present at least three representative examples from the speech or article as supporting evidence for the main idea
        • It must make the case for each example through thorough and helpful analysis
