ART HIST 2

Hi class, I really appreciated your responses to the Zurbaran  video last week.  I selected that video as a way to clear a mindspace  for the real work of Art History - analysis.

If you recall from last week's module, there is a four-part process  that can be used in doing Art History.  If we consider your previous  essay to have been dedicated to looking, this one will move you further  along the art historical path.  

For this reason, I am asking everyone to revisit our friend from last  week.  You will find that you now need to take a different but related  approach to the work, and to write about it in formal, structured  language.  Whereas last week you recorded your EMOTIONAL reactions to  the painting, now you need to create a PRECISE, ORDERLY essay that  breaks down the painting into its constituent parts.  This process of  visually breaking down an artwork is known as FORMAL ANALYSIS.  

Please submit a two page FORMAL ANALYSIS of the painting of the Zurbaran painting ( https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/francisco-de-zurbaran-a-cup-of-water-and-a-rose ).  Instructions for how to do a formal analysis are attached.
