Academic Argument Essay For the Academic Research Essay assignment, you will take a position on the topic you chose for the Synthesis Essay. (If you choose to change your topic, you must notify Ms. Hogelin by e-mail for approval of your new topic.) You will need to not only argue your position on the issue but also anticipate counterarguments and refute them. This essay will include summary of what scholars and researchers have said about your topic and your response. Required number of sources: minimum of 5. At least 3 sources must be scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles. Only one website is allowed, but it must be credible. The remaining sources can be newspaper or magazine articles. Format: 5-7 pages, typed, double-spaced, 1" margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman font.   Works Cited page and in-text citations in MLA format. Evaluation Criteria:

•Clear, direct thesis statement that makes an argument about the issue

•Logical organization

•Plenty of evidence (quotes, paraphrase, examples) to support your points

•Presentation of counterargument and your response to it

•A thoughtful conclusion that explains the overall significance of your thesis. (This part answers the “so what?” and “who cares?” questions.) 

•MLA Works Cited page and in-text citations

•Follows standard American rules of grammar and usage
