Argument Paper

Argument Paper Topic: Does the unconscious truly exist?  If so, provide a justification for our belief that is does exist and has some power over us.

Thesis: The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness that impacts who we are. The unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experiences, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences.

Three Supporting Reasons:

• Hidden desires come out through dreams, Freudian Slips, and free association
• Many of our feelings, desires, and emotions are repressed out of awareness because they are too threatening.
• Since what is stored in the unconscious is too threatening to acknowledge, the brain has created defense mechanisms to avoid bringing it forward.
