Argument Essay

Topic: Should community college be free? 

In this assignment you will write an argument essay for the topic above by using the outline and the six sources that are provided for you in the outline. The Essay needs to be in MLA format and it must be 1200-1500 word. You are only allowed to use the sources that are in the outline. You’ll be using one of the article to present a counterargument and you will be using the rest of the articles to support your position. The essay must include SIX research sources from the outline. FIVE of these sources will support your position and ONE of them will provide your ideas for the counterargument for the essay. (Download the outline)


Use the following revision checklist to make sure the final draft of your essay is effective.



Revision checklist

Does the essay have an      interesting and suitable title?

Does the essay have a catchy      introduction that is related to the central focus of the essay?

Does the essay have a thesis at      the end of the introduction, and does it clearly state the key argument      and the three main ideas?  

Is the whole essay focused on      the thesis?

Does each paragraph in the      essay begin with a topic sentence that relates to the key ideas in the      thesis?

Has the information in each      main idea been carefully organized in subpoints?

Do the subpoints follow the      organization of S (statement); E (evidence); and X (explanation)?

Has the evidence been well      integrated in the essay, using signal phrases and in-text citations?

Does the evidence support the      main idea, and is it relevant to the main idea?

Has all evidence been strongly      analyzed to show how it proves the point you are making?

Has each main idea been concluded by connecting it to the topic sentences and to the thesis?

Is your explanation/analysis of  each point fully developed, examining all of the issues that raise questions of why and how, etc.?

Have you kept a focus on the topic sentence in your explanation?

Does the essay have a good conclusion that ties up all the points and takes the reader to a new  understanding of the topic?

Have you included counterarguments,   and have you used a strong refutation to prove your point?

Have you included a Works Cited page, and is it accurately formatted?

Have your proofread the essay  to make sure it does not have errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation?

Does your essay have proper MLA format?  Your essay must include accurate in-text citations and a Works Cited list. You must use MLA documentation properly so that you do not plagiarize.
