APPRAISAL OF THERAPEITIC MODALITY

Appraisal of Therapeutic Modalities of Care

Carefully consider one of the topics addressed this week:

• Telepsychiatry
• Hallucinogenic therapy
• Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
• Pharmacogenomics

Many of these modalities are relatively new to the psychiatric treatment realm.  It is important to consider the pros and cons of each therapeutic modality as well as its applicability to certain groups of patients when determining its usefulness in your practice.  The purpose of this assignment is to identify research that has been done with one or more of these modalities and determine the quality of the research.  Locate one article describing research with one or more of these modalities as a form of treatment for a group of selected patients.  Answer the following questions using this template.

• Describe the study and its purpose.
• Describe the results of the study.
• Discuss whether you found the results of the study to be helpful.
• Based on the findings in this study, would you consider this as a treatment modality?  Why? or Why not?

Include examples from the article to support your responses and make sure your responses reflect depth and synthesis of the material.  Please upload the article and the completed template with your review as separate documents to the assignment area clearly labeled so they can easily be located for grading.
