HIEs enable the electronic sharing of health information between different healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and public health agencies. The primary goal of HIEs is to improve continuity of care by ensuring that patient information is available when and where it is needed. Standards are essential to the successful operation of both EHR systems and HIEs. The use of standards also enhances data quality and reliability, which is especially important for public health reporting and population health management.
