“What Is Genre Theory?” CanLit Guides, canlitguides.ca/canlit-guides-editorial-team/close-reading-prose/what-is-genre-theory/. Accessed 4 Nov. 2023.
The article CanLit Guides editorial team did a great job at explaining the basics of genre and how genre theory has changed. They explain that genre is most commonly identified as a writing style. At a high school level, most students probably think they know what genres are. As said in the article, some examples of common genres are comedy, romance, mystery, drama, etc. This article explains that genre goes further than just basic genres. In this article, they define current genre theory to be “a response to a specific and recurrent social situation”(CanLit 2). The main point in this article is to explain how genres change based on the situation, who is talking, or who is being spoken to. They give great examples about how you read novels, newspapers, and academic articles very differently. They are all very different when it comes to social settings and situations. I think this article would be very beneficial to high schoolers because it breaks down genres in a simple way. Adding things learned from this article to a high school unit plan would make it easier to help kids understand the changes of genre in different settings.
“Composition Studies.” Composition Studies | Genre Across Borders (GXB), genreacrossborders.org/composition-studies. Accessed 4 Nov. 2023.
Peter’s article on composition studies thoroughly explains the teaching of genre in grade school. He explains that the “modes of discourse” were the most dominant genres. These included narration, description, exposition, and argument). According to Peter, most schools still only use these genres to teach their first year students. Peter dives more into how speech is changing and therefore changing genres. He explains the term discourse community as speech varying depending on what group is writing or talking. He explains that this draws boundaries between groups because they have different genres. Peter’s consensus is that “genre theory in composition can be seen in three spheres of professional activity—the field’s theoretical discourse, writing program administration, and the writing classroom” (peter). This is a very useful article to access while teaching high schoolers genre theory. In the paragraph Genre in the Classroom, Peter gives some examples on how to teach students and help them understand genre. The one I would add to a high school unit plan is the teaching genre as a process. Peter says that this “recommends a lesson that asks students to analyze, explain, and—if necessary -- the rhetorical situation they’ve defined—reinvent the genre of the brochure”(Peter). Adding information learned from this article will greatly help students understand genre composition studies.
