For this TIO, I would like you to develop a semi-structured interview guide based on your research proposal topic. I understand that not all research questions will lend themselves to this particular data collection method, but you should be able to alter your topic slightly so that it fits the parameters of the assignment (check with me in advance if this is something you are struggling with). As you construct your interview guide, you should consider our class material to ensure that you include the types of questions that will result in reliable data that addresses your research question.

Your interview guide should contain the following:

Your research question: This may have changed slightly from the one you submitted earlier in the class, which is fine. Consult me if you have more significant deviations.

  1. A description of the group you are interviewing: Be specific here, providing all of the details of the population you would like to speak with including important sampling variations.
  2. A description of your ideal interview setting + explanation: Be specific here, and consider this to be the best-case-scenario (i.e. unlimited budget, not in a pandemic, etc.). Then, considering the class material we have covered this week, explain why you think this might be the best setting.
  3. Five open-ended interview questions: List the questions in the sequence you would ask them (understanding that five will likely not be enough to cover your question thoroughly – that’s not the point of this activity). As you construct your questions, consider our course material this week in terms of sequencing, content, style, communicating effectively, and avoiding common problems in question formulation (hint: all of these come from headings in Chapter 4).

Submit your responses to these questions in a Word document or PDF with 1” margins, 12 pt. font. The standard “Trying It Out Grading Rubric” will be used to grade your submission (located on the “Course Information” page of our website).
