Climate change is a crucial global health determinant, a process that has been accelerated by energy generation systems that are based on fossil fuels. Such systems also increase the release of greenhouse gases that speed up global warming and lead to a rise in more extreme weather such as floods, droughts, and storms (Romanello et al., 2024). These disasters interfere with infrastructure, move people from their homes, and expose at-risk communities to a higher risk of health.

The combination of climate change and energy consumption creates environmental instability that now endangers world food systems and global public health. Climate-driven shocks have considerably escalated food insecurity and weakened global resilience (Fanzo et al., 2025). In addition, climate change-driven agricultural instability has increased the likelihood of malnutrition and disease, thereby making climate change-related environmental degradation and population health more interrelated (Begna, 2025).

(a) Disaster Phases and Impact on Conflict and Health

Disasters generally occur in the four phases of: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Mitigation aims to reduce long-term risk through sustainable infrastructure and environmental planning. But mitigating with climate variability has become more difficult. Preparedness consists of preparedness plans, training, and surveillance mechanisms, but resource disparities limit the global readiness infrastructure.

Response emphasizes emergency interventions at times of greatest risk for disease, injury and displacement to local populations. Recovery attempts to return back to normalcy but is often delayed by economic dislocation and political volatility. In fact, climate disasters tend to deepen conflict due to intensified competition for available resources, such as land and water. Recent global studies indicate that the combination of conflict and environmental shocks caused acute food insecurity to millions of people in the world (Global Report on Food Crises, 2025).

(b) Agriculture and Health Interrelationship

Climate change is having a profound impact on agriculture — in changes to rainfall patterns, soil degradation, and temperature extremes. All of these factors drastically lower crop productivity and nutritional quality (Begna, 2025). Lower agricultural production results in malnutrition and lessens immunity, increasing susceptibility to disease. Environmental stress might also amplify zoonotic disease spread as it interrupts ecosystems (Fanzo et al., 2025). Conversely, sustainable agricultural systems improve population health by ensuring access to nutritious food and stabilizing food supply chains.

(c) Food Quantity and Food Security Amid Global Political Challenges

Food security relies on availability, access, and stability. Climate-driven catastrophes and political instability can affect every aspect of those dimensions. Findings demonstrate that climate shocks together with geopolitical crises have elevated hunger levels worldwide in the past several years (Global Report on Food Crises, 2025).

Maintaining food security requires:

• Climate-resilient agricultural systems

• Diversified energy strategies

• International policy cooperation Global coordination remains essential to prevent widespread food insecurity in climate-affected regions (Romanello et al., 2024).

DNP Essentials Alignment

This discussion would be consistent with the DNP-prepared nurse’s obligation to impact these global determinants of health. Integrating these areas of climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and food security demonstrates DNP Essential III (Population Health) and Essential V (Health Policy Advocacy). DNP leaders are critical to driving interdisciplinary strategies that improve global health resilience to climate-related challenges. In addition, DNP-prepared nurses are uniquely situated to influence policy development that promotes sustainable health systems and equitable access to essential resources during environmental crises.

Their advanced leadership skills allow them to make strides from clinical practice to public health initiatives, with vulnerable populations protected against the disproportionate effects that climate-related disasters may have on them. At the same time, DNP professionals play a part in creating a framework that aims to prevent long-term chaos from occurring; this way community stability and health system adaptability are supported.

Based on evidence-based advocacy and systems thinking, DNP leaders can guide innovative solutions that bolster readiness, reduce risks, and encourage sustainability of global health by implementing new approaches that are supported by effective advocacy and systemic thinking.
