We will investigate how social and political ideas have influenced ecological science, how ecological concepts have influenced Western politics and society, and how different generations of ecological researchers have viewed their role in society. We will incorporate disciplinary perspectives from the history of science and technology as well as environmental history in order to grapple with the following questions:

o What are the historical roots of ecological science in Western thought? o How have naturalists and ecologists changed their views of nature over the past two centuries? o How do the social and political implications of ecology distinguish it from other scientific disciplines? o How have social and political ideas influenced ecological science and its predecessor, natural history? o How have ecological concepts influenced Western politics and society? o How have different generations of naturalists and ecologists viewed their role in society? o How have environmentalists used scientific ideas to advance their proposed policies?
