For this Discussion Assignment, you should explore other streams of musical expression that
developed during the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Among these styles were Appalachian
ballads, bluegrass, gospel music, and folk music. These particular styles will be examined
relative to the cultural influence and expressive character of each. As part of your discussion, you will
differentiate the musical features and social history of country music and bluegrass music by
discussing key features of these styles and developing a perspective related to the derivative,
extension, or continuation of these styles from earlier traditions.
