American art history paper on "Both Members of This Club" by George Bellows

This paper (7-9 double-spaced  12-point font, Times New Roman font) will need full apparatus of documentation, including footnotes, bibliography and good quality, captioned illustrations.

The paper inevitably will include illustrations of other relevant artworks or contextual, visual materials, but the additional works and materials must illuminate the aesthetic qualities and social, cultural, political meanings of your primary art object.

The papers will be graded on the following:  your comprehension of scholarly and primary-source literature; the clarity and persuasiveness of your visual analysis, critical interpretation and writing; and the proper, complete documentation of quotations and sources. Avoid rambling, unfocused narratives, non-sequiturs, strings of unexplained quotations, unnecessary detail, pretentious jargon, undefined terms, and unidentified persons or things. Make sure your pronouns have antecedents. In other words, write clearly and please proofread for correct grammar and spelling. Write your papers around a central thesis based upon your close visual analysis of the artworks and critical reading of textual sources. Be sure to support your argument with good, reliable evidence. I do not want long quotes or strings of quotations, and I want you to do more than paraphrase or parrot the words of previous scholars. Write as much as possible in your own words.

Do not use parenthetical notes within the main body of the text for documenting sources. Employ footnotes. Use footnotes rather than endnotes. Number the footnotes consecutively throughout the paper using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, …). Do not use Roman numerals. Do not repeat the use of any footnote number. Do not invert the author’s name for footnotes. Only invert the author’s name for the bibliography for purposes of alphabetizing the bibliographic sources. Your first citation of a book or article should provide the complete title and complete publication information (place, publisher, date). In addition, you must provide specific, precise page numbers in your footnotes, so that a reader can easily trace your scholarship back to the texts that you are quoting or paraphrasing. If you quote primary source material quoted within a secondary source, you must state in your footnote the primary source of the quotation (whose words are being quoted by the secondary source author, from what text, dating from when?). Inadequate, improper footnote documentation will automatically result in your receiving an unsatisfactory (D) or failing grade.  Footnotes and bibliography are essential for quoted and paraphrased material and the documentation of sources. Do not plagiarize. Use The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, for proper research formatting, footnote documentation and bibliography. See also the Sylvan Barnet book for a summary of documentation rules.
