Over the past two centuries, fossil fuels have helped us build the complex industrialized societies we enjoy today. Yet our supplies of conventional fossil fuels are declining. We have responded to this challenge by expanding our search for new sources of fossil fuels. This will eventually lead to us paying ever-higher economic, health, and environmental costs.

Are there alternatives to reaching further for fossil fuels to meet our increasing demands for energy?
