For this paper, you will write an essay considering what 12 Years a Slave, in both book and film, teaches the reader and viewer about slavery and the history of the antebellum United States. There are many ways to approach the topic, but what I do not want is a simplistic, general statement such as “Solomon Northup shows that slavery was bad.” Such a statement does not show me that you have read and analyzed the text – you could arrive at such a conclusion without even reading the first page of the narrative. Instead, consider how Northup and the film director convey their ideas. Make sure that your essay includes a thesis statement and is organized around that thesis.
