It is explained in chapter 1 that what drives people to consume is not necessarily greed but fear of not being deemed “successful” by others around us. Explain it means to “keep up with the Joneses.” Also, where do many U.S. citizens (and others) get their ideas about the “American” lifestyle? (pgs. 22-23)
