Community Service and Leadership Values
As a part of my community service with the influential organization Catchafire, I will visit Upper Marlboro this week. Recognized for its dedication to meeting community needs via skill-based volunteering, Catchafire is crucial in promoting positive transformation. Integrity, respect, and humility are the three pillars around which I would build my hypothetical leadership position within this organization to maximize the effect of our charitable and outreach initiatives.
Establishing and retaining trust is crucial, and integrity is the foundation of Catchafire's goal. Trust in the organizations' honesty and integrity is crucial for volunteers and the general public (Catchafire, 2020). As a leader, putting integrity first ensures the company follows through on its promises, which builds trust among employees and society.
Maintaining a firm commitment to respect as a core leadership principle is essential in the vibrant and varied Upper Marlboro community. According to UN Volunteers (n.d.), while providing Catchafire's services, it is essential to fully comprehend and value the distinct viewpoints and requirements of the local society. Embracing respect allows us to build an inclusive space that appreciates Upper Marlboro residents' many cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. Not only does this show appreciation for the community's efforts, but it also brings volunteers closer together in a common mission.
Humility arises as another essential leadership quality when recognizing the teamwork involved in community involvement. Collective efforts typically answer community concerns successfully, and Catchafire is no exception. Actively listening to the community, appreciating criticism, and keeping an open mind to ongoing learning and development are all components of embracing humility (Volunteer Match, 2020b). Because of our humility, we can modify our plans in response to Upper Marlboro's changing requirements, keeping our programs current, effective, and relevant.

Hart City Case Study – Scenario 3 Program Transcript
MALE SPEAKER: Hey, Michael. Do you need any help? Who are those care packages for?
MALE SPEAKER: No. I'm fine, thanks. I'm putting together the last one now. I plan to do some outreach today. You know, the teens down the street, I'm making these so they can have a few daily essentials.
I'm going to introduce myself and invite them in to make it less scary for them to come inside. I'll let them know that they can receive assistance here. But if you want to help, grab me three blankets and water jugs from the closet and help me load them into the van while I box up these care packages.
MALE SPEAKER: Sure. I'll grab those. I think outreach is a powerful human services tool. It helps us reach people who don't come to us. It's a great way to meet people and support them where they are.
MALE SPEAKER: It also shows that our work reaches beyond the office. It can happen anywhere and anytime. Thanks for the extra hands, Chris. The kids will definitely appreciate these care packages.
MALE SPEAKER: Hope you can talk them into coming here. See you later.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Hey, who's that?
FEMALE SPEAKER: I don't know. Who cares?
FEMALE SPEAKER: Are you coming to lecture us about why we can't hang out here
FEMALE SPEAKER: Or tell us to move or sleep somewhere else?
MALE SPEAKER: Yeah, if we had somewhere else, we would be there already.
MALE SPEAKER: No, I am not here to lecture you. I actually brought you food, juice, water, blankets, and hygiene items. My name is Michael. I worked down the street at the homeless shelter. I came by to offer you a place to stay.
We have space available if you want to come by. I work the evening shift today. So I would be the one to show you to your rooms. In the morning, I can get you connected with any services that you need.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Thank you for helping us out. I think I'm in.
FEMALE SPEAKER: What time do we need to be there?

MALE SPEAKER: Check in for rooms ends in two hours. You all can come by anytime between now and then.
MALE SPEAKER: I'm in. A room and a bed sounds pretty good right now.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Yeah, I guess I'm in too.
MALE SPEAKER: OK, I'll go back to prepare your rooms. I'll be up front so that you see me as soon as you come in. See you soon.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AS A WINDOW INTO OUTREACH AND HUMANITARIAN WORK
Advanced human services professional practitioners often engage in outreach and humanitarian work. Outreach work entails going out into the community and actively engaging with potential service users, referring them to appropriate services, and following up with them to ensure they are getting the help they need. There are several reasons why outreach work is important in the practice of human services. First, service users may be unwilling or unable to visit a human services organization—or they may be unaware that the organization exists. Second, it is often useful to observe the service users in their environment to gain a better understanding of the help they need and the progress they are making.
Humanitarian work is a broad term that encompasses activities designed to improve service users’ lives and better the community. Examples of humanitarian work include providing people with access to clean water and food after a disaster, helping refugees and immigrants access language-specific and culturally appropriate health services, and arranging for young girls to receive formal education in war-torn countries. Keep in mind that outreach and humanitarian work are not mutually exclusive, that is, they can be done at the same time and in the same setting. For instance, an advanced human services professional practitioner who visits a homeless encampment to share information about programs for affordable housing and distributes food and blankets is engaging in both outreach and humanitarian work.
For this Assignment, you complete 1 hour of community service, which will allow you to observe outreach and humanitarian work in action. Then, you compare what you observed in your community service experience to outreach and humanitarian efforts in a Hart City scenario to better understand these important functions of human services practice.
RESOURCES
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.
TO PREPARE
· Review the Learning Resources on outreach and humanitarian work. Consider the examples and characteristics of this type of work and the importance of understanding group dynamics for this type of work.
· Complete your community service. As you do so, make note of specific examples of outreach and humanitarian work you performed or observed. The examples could be from the activities you were asked to complete, the actions of leaders, employees, or other volunteers, and/or the initiatives of the organization. In addition, identify leadership values that you observed or that may be relevant given the organization’s outreach and humanitarian efforts.
· Go to the Hart City virtual community using the link that is provided in the Learning Resources. Once you are in the community, visit the Hart City Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter and view the scenario about outreach and humanitarian work. Consider how the advanced human services professional practitioners in the scenario engage in outreach and humanitarian work and how those examples compare to the examples of outreach and humanitarian work from your community service experience. In addition, consider the leadership values that might guide the practitioners in the scenario and how those values compare to those from your community service experience.
· Think about how your observations from your community service experience and the Hart City scenario contribute to your understanding of the outreach and humanitarian functions of human services practice and the role of leadership values in carrying out these functions.
