Instructions for short paper 1

1. The short essays are meant to give you practice writing about fiction. Unlike a term paper, these will require that you follow specific instructions to accomplish some part of understanding the literature.
2. Papers must be between 1 and 2 pages.
3. They must be double spaced, with twelve point Roman font.
4. I will grade this on accuracy within the assignment, strength of argument, and, because this is an English class, style, grammar and language use.
5. The assignments may have multiple parts: make sure you are accomplishing all the required parts.

For essay one:

Select a short passage in one of the stories we have read so far and write a 1 to 2-page explication. Remember that an explication is an “unfolding.” Explain to the reader what the passage means as precisely as possible and how it works in the story. Use the descriptions and example in your textbook as guides, though your paper will not be as long.
