A researcher is interested in seeing whether a drug improves memory in people, who are suffering from a memory disorder. The researcher selects 15 people, who have been diagnosed with mild memory disorder. On Day 1 of the study, the researcher reads a list of 10 words and records the number of words each participant is able to recall. All participants are then given a new daily medication. On Day 7, the researcher administers a list of 10 words and records the number of words each participant is able to recall. The data for each participant is in the below table. The researcher decides to use a .05 significance level to assess the claim that the drug improves memory.
1. Identify the appropriate hypothesis test for analyzing this data including the conditions for using this test.
2. Complete the four steps of hypothesis testing necessary to determine whether there is a change in memory retention, for a list of words, from Day 1 to Day 7 and include each step in your final study group answer. Note:
For Step 2, be sure to show how the test statistic would be calculated. You may use then matched pairs t-test calculator to check your answers for Step II and calculate the p-value for Step III: Matched Pairs t-test Applet with Raw Data. The idea is to make sure that you understand where the test statistic is derived from (note: there is specific information on how to set up a table for calculation in the matched pairs t-test synopsis: Matched Pairs t-test Synopsis).
In Step IV, please be sure to describe results in terms of the data (i.e., Does the drug appear to improve memory?).
3. Given the conclusion found in #2, which type of error (Type I or Type II) is a possibility? Why?
