Based on the brief research I did on Christie and Bridgegate, I am in support of Gutherie’s position that Christie set the tone that allowed the scandal to occur. Followers and subordinates will typically follow along with the example set by their leader regardless of whether it is positive or negative. A negative tone will be followed in an effort towards social acceptability. It seems that in this Bridgegate example, The New York Times wrote., “it was impossible for even casual trial observers not to discern, from witness after witness, the evident viciousness and grubbiness of the governor and his administration” (2016). It seems that Christie created a culture in his administration that catered to his wants despite the consequences. Upon my research, I also discovered that some of the other key players in the scandal were appointed their positions based on their connections with the governor. I can’t reasonably assert that Christie was unaware of their actions. At most, he may not have been fully aware, however, this situation is an example of how a leader shaped a group to act unethically.
