COM 229 Module Six Activity Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
Successful layouts use the principles of design to establish visual hierarchy of content, and there are a wide variety of tools available to help designers create visually appealing layouts. For this activity, you will explore a few different layout tools to compare their strengths, drawbacks, and usability.
Prompt
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Part I: Layout Design
- Layout Recreation: Recreate a provided layout using a few different layout tools by following the steps below:
- View the original layout you will recreate by downloading this sample layout PDF.
- Select three of the tools you explored in this week’s module resources section to recreate the provided layout.
- Spend 20 minutes working on recreating the provided layout using each tool, and then save each version as a PDF document. Note: There is no expectation that you will finish your replica; just see what you can do in a short period of time with your selected tool.
Part II: Tool Evaluation Evaluate the layout tools you used for strengths, drawbacks, and usability in a short written response.
- Tool Strengths: Describe some of the helpful features and strengths of each layout tool you used.
- Tool Limitations: Describe some of the drawbacks or limitations of each layout tool you used.
- Tool Recommendations: Explain which of the three tools you explored you would recommend using for layout design in the future, and why.
What to Submit
To complete this activity, you must submit the following:
Layout Design Submit your recreated layouts as a PDF documents. Make sure to name the file clearly (for example, “InDesign_Layout_JDoe.pdf”).
Tool Evaluation Submit your tool assignment as a 200- to 300-word Word document.
