1. J.T. constantly tries to portray that his gang, the Black Kings, is beneficial to the community.  Do you agree?  Please discuss both the advantages and disadvantages that you found in the book of having a gang in charge of the residents of Robert Taylor Homes. 
2. Please discuss Venkatesh’s portrayal of the police and other “legitimate” institutions of power in the book.  To what extent do you believe that these institutions are responsible for the conditions at Robert Taylor and the way gangs flourish in these communities?
