 In “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” Ernest Hemingway presents the theme of the basic dignity and courage a man must have to face even the most adverse conditions. A man must have these qualities, or acquire them. This is exemplified by Wilson when he says: “Fear gone like an apparition. Something else grew in its place. Main thing a man had. Made him into a man.” How does Hemingway develop this theme through the ideas and events described in the story?
