question

What examples of orientation have you had as a new hire that have been particularly effective or ineffective? Explain.

Student response

Some examples of new hire that I have had in the past consist of a tour around the facility, meeting coworkers, a brief explanation of what I should expect, and then ultimately training. What I have found to be helpful is knowing where everything needed is in a new job. It’s already nerve wrecking enough to be in a whole new environment and not knowing where anything is makes a huge difference.  I remember in one job they didn’t show me where anything was in the school and since I was an instructional aide it was crucial for some job functions. I eventually mapped out the school but if they had shown me around it would have made the first few days less stressful. Now that I work in an administrative setting the job training was crucial. There are definitely certain things I would have struggled with a lot more if someone hadn’t properly trained me on the tasks. As the text said orientation “ help(s) the employee understand his or her role”.
