Read Fences by August Wilson.

Much of the discussion in this play addresses Troy as a tragic hero and how his character affects everyone around him. For this option I’d like you to consider what Troy sees in terms of what America means to him. In other words, what is the American identity to Troy Maxson. We know his attitudes toward many things: marriage, baseball, his children, his job, responsibility, etc. How do all of these things ( and those not mentioned) determine how he understands America. Ultimately, what does America mean to him. Support your assertions with the text.
