In my personal culture, many of my Hispanic family members were raised and some still fully believe in VapoRub being a medicine that can do more than just its intended purpose. VapoRub's primary use is for upper respiratory symptoms such as cough and throat irritation as well as a topical analgesic for some muscle and joint pain (VapoRub, 2024). There has been some research done that shows promise that it can be used for more functions such as toenail fungus, headache, ache, and even bug repellent (Hayes, K. 2023). While there is minimal evidence that VapoRub has the ability to treat some other symptoms than intended, many people in my culture will believe that this medication has properties that are not yet backed by science from treating pain related to surgery to being a treatment for cancer. I'm sure that many of these farfetched effects can be due to placebo but who knows, maybe there is some room for VapoRub in the treatment world other than what has been previously found by science.
