Deprivation vs. Importation Model (25 points)
It has often been stated that prison is a society unto itself. This week we explored the norms and values that help shape this society and helped form what is known as the prison subculture. This subculture is evident and displays similarities among various prisons at different levels and in different locations in terms of norms, values, and language. Why is this? How did these norms and values come to be?

There are two major theoretical frameworks used to explain the development of the prison subculture: the deprivation model and the importation model. For this discussion, students will first compare and contrast these two theories, then choose the one that comes closest to reflecting their personal views. Be sure to explain your choice.
