Discussion board prompts:

Adrian Ivkahiv argues that cinema is not so much a form of representation but a form of poiesis, that is, it becomes “productive” for viewers. Can you explain what he means by that and how that happens? He also says that films work to create 1. space (the geomorphic) that is different from what appears to be endowed with life (2. the bio or anima-morphic). Film also creates 3.a sense of agency (the anthropomorphic), of what or who is able to act and create changes that impacts viewers in long-lasting ways. Think about these 3 aspects as you watch the documentary 500 Years.

Please answer/react to at least 2 of the following prompts. (You are welcome to comment on all 3!). Write about 2 paragraphs.

Remember to read each other and include at least one comment on someone else’s post.

1. Comment on what parts of this film impact you more and think about the film techniques used to achieve this. (For example, close-ups, sound track, other) Are these techniques absent or used differently in the parts that impact you less?

2. The film begins by asserting that colonialism, genocide, dispossession, and extractivism are an ongoing continuity that has defined what we call Latin America for 500 years. In comparison with Waste Land and Albatross, and Patel and Moore’s chapter, do you think this film does a good job showing this continuity? Why yes, why no?

3. 500 Years also references an Ixil community’s resistance to neo-extractive mining as well as Mayan understanding of the human and the non-human (“mother earth”). What film strategies are used to establish this film argument? Remember Ivakhiv and explain what this film establishes as the “geomorphic”, the “biomorphic,” and the “anthropomorphic.” What techniques could have been used to make this understanding of human-non-human relations and the importance of resisting mining more powerful?
