Use the UMGC library to locate journal articles, books, and other sources that will help you identify information about your industry or field. You can research an industry using Business Research and on a career field using CareerOneStop.
Finally, you need to think about what the competition is like. Who else is seeking positions in this profession? Who are the primary competitors for employment and upward mobility in this field? Can you identify individuals who are your main competition (e.g., if you are competing internally)? How do you compare to these competitors? What do you need to do to become more competitive? A trend could be something well-known in the industry, a new development, or something you consider unrecognized or disputed. You will conduct research for trends to complete the first part of your project. Review resources that you find in periodicals, journals, newspapers, industry blogs, and other websites speciifc to the industry or area of study to find the best references to inform your choice of trends. Use industry-specific keywords, and take notes on your reading because you will be building on this research in the next step as you choose an issue within one of the trends.
Searching for relevant and timely sources and gathering citation details may take up to three hours. Remember that not all information that you find will be useful. It is important to evaluate resources that you find.
Once you decide what resources you will use to support your paper, be sure that you provide complete citations in APA format on a References page.
In the past, many students had to resubmit their papers for this project. We hope that a template will help organize the deliverables more efficiently. This milestone submission will provide an opportunity for ungraded feedback from your professor to ensure that you are off to a good start. Use the feedback to refine your trends section and inform practices for the issue section. By the end of Week 2, submit a draft of your paper with the following elements:
· a complete cover sheet;
· a section that introduces the industry, the top trends you identified, and the issue of interest that you will expand on in your final draft;
· draft headings to organize the issue section; and
· a draft References page. You will add more resources to this.
When you submit your draft for review, your professor will provide feedback on your trends section and the direction of the paper. The professor will also comment on citation formats so that you can master this requirement for your final draft. Use this feedback to improve and refine your work. If you have questions about the feedback, ask for clarification or request a call or a session on Zoom.

Submit your draft to this assignment folder. It will not be graded, but you will receive feedback from your professor. While you wait for your feedback, continue research on the issue of interest, as described in Step 2.
Your research paper should accomplish two objectives:
· Identify the three top trends in your industry and your rationale for your choices, based on the resources you found.
· Discuss the issue within one of the trends (or from the field of study) that you deem important, based on the current state of the industry. You will present your analysis of facts and a well-reasoned conclusion of how this issue affects the industry.
Your paper will be five to seven pages, not including your cover page and References page(s), double-spaced and set up in APA standard formatting. It does not require an abstract.

These trends highlight both the tremendous potential and the complex challenges of adopting generative AI technologies. Trend 1: Adoption of Generative AI into Workplace and Life
Generative AI is starting to be a big part of how work gets done, and it’s making a real impact across industries. Unlike traditional automation tools that follow predefined rules, generative AI systems can create original content, analyze complex data, and assist with problem-solving in ways that were previously unimaginable. This new wave of AI adoption enables companies to automate both routine tasks—such as creating emails, summarizing thoughts, and generating development code—and more creative functions, including marketing content and design suggestions. The rapid incorporation of these tools signals a major transformation in how work is structured and performed, fundamentally changing productivity models and operational efficiency. An Important Emerging Issue: Security in Generative AI Applications
Among the many transformative trends shaping the generative AI industry, the increasing focus on security represents the most critical emerging issue. As organizations rapidly adopt AI systems, the risks associated with vulnerabilities in generative models—including data breaches, adversarial manipulation, and unauthorized synthetic content generation—pose significant threats to business operations, user privacy, and overall trust in AI technologies. Addressing security proactively is essential not only to protect assets but also to ensure sustainable adoption of generative AI. Without robust security frameworks, the industry risks severe reputational damage and regulatory backlash, which could stall innovation and deployment at scale. My proposed approach centers on integrating comprehensive AI-specific security measures throughout the AI development lifecycle, including secure data handling, model robustness testing, and continuous monitoring for malicious activity. This approach aligns with best practices advocated by leading cybersecurity researchers, who emphasize the importance of proactive defenses tailored for AI’s unique vulnerabilities (Nguyen et al., 2024). Unlike traditional IT security, AI security must consider threats such as adversarial inputs designed to manipulate outputs or data poisoning attacks that degrade model accuracy over time. By embedding security early in design and continuously updating defenses, organizations can mitigate these emerging risks effectively. Comment by Owner: Who would do this?
Some organizations prioritize regulatory compliance and reactive security incident response rather than embedding security within AI development from the outset. For example, certain firms focus heavily on meeting data privacy laws like GDPR but may overlook adversarial attack vectors specific to AI models (Smith & Zhao, 2023). While compliance is critical, relying solely on it leaves gaps exploitable by sophisticated and seasoned attackers. Moreover, purely reactive approaches often result in costly breaches and loss of user confidence before issues are resolved. In contrast, my approach advocates for a “security-by-design” philosophy, which anticipates potential threats and integrates safeguards proactively.
Some who disagree might argue that implementing rigorous AI-specific security measures increases development time and costs, potentially slowing innovation. However, evidence from early adopters shows that security investments reduce long-term risks and associated expenses from breaches and downtime (Lee, 2024). Furthermore, a secure AI system builds user trust, which accelerates adoption and competitive advantage. Ignoring security concerns can lead to far greater financial and reputational harm than the upfront costs of safeguarding AI technologies.
In conclusion, security is the most important emerging issue in the generative AI industry due to the novel and escalating risks associated with AI models. Proactively embedding security within AI development—beyond mere regulatory compliance—is essential for sustainable, trustworthy, and scalable AI deployment. As the industry evolves, addressing these challenges head-on will protect organizations and users alike while fostering innovation and growth.
