What makes Thale's method clearly philosophical was the fact that he used observations based on his environment to understand nature outside of religion and myth. As he believed all things was made of water and so everything was connected, because water could take different shapes and forms, and was in everything living the reasoning of his belief from multiple viewpoints and understanding it is philosophical.
Thale's approach may have been seen as radical as his beliefs were not of norm. Thales challenged what was knowledge for those in the era he existed, stirring the pot of tradition for centuries before him. The Greek belief system was based on gods. He sought to explore oneness and because this was never done it was radical. As philosophy is when one tries to understand the world and one's place in it, it can be seen where his belief has a process of thought for a new idea and his investigation of that thought is not of popular view in his time.
