Maybe we are  attracted  to those who are like us (consensual validation) or maybe opposites attract. Maybe we settle for those that are as attractive as we are (matching hypothesis) or maybe love is blind. Maybe when we seem to have a chemistry between us we really do, and it really is chemistry, the product of evolution. Attraction is just a trick to get us to perpetuate the species.
