You were just assigned to the global team for your organization. Based on your readings and research, what concerns do you have and what are some things you want to focus on moving forward?

Remember, there are no wrong answers, just different perspectives.

EXAMPLE

Being assigned to a global team would be a great opportunity, but there are several areas I would be concerned about going into the assignment. My biggest concerns would be communication, cultural differences, building trust, and understanding how different team members approach leadership and decision-making. Throughout my military career, I have worked with people from different backgrounds and have had opportunities to operate in international environments. Those experiences have shown me that the way one group communicates or solves problems may not necessarily work with another.

One of my first priorities would be understanding the cultural differences within the team. Schneider et al. (2014) explain that culture can influence management practices, organizational behavior, strategy, and how individuals interact within an organization. This is important because it would be easy to assume that everyone approaches communication, leadership, or conflict the same way. On a global team, I would need to recognize those differences and be willing to adjust my leadership and communication style instead of expecting everyone else to adapt to mine.

Communication and trust would also be major areas of focus. Wildman and Griffith (2015) explain that global teams face unique challenges involving culture, communication, conflict, trust, and geographical separation. I think establishing clear expectations early would help reduce some of these problems. In aviation maintenance, I have learned that when several people or organizations are working toward the same objective, unclear responsibilities or poor communication can quickly create problems. I would want the team to establish how we communicate, who is responsible for specific tasks, how decisions are made, and what timelines everyone is expected to meet. Another area I would focus on is how cultural differences can actually benefit the team. Zakaria (2017) explains that cultural diversity can create challenges such as miscommunication and different decision-making behaviors, but it can also provide different perspectives, creativity, and innovation. Instead of viewing those differences as obstacles, I would want to understand how we could use them to make better decisions.

I believe being successful on a global team requires adaptability and a willingness to learn from others. My goal would be to establish trust, communicate clearly, and understand what each team member brings to the organization rather than expecting everyone to operate the same way I am accustomed to.
