1-1 Discussion: History and Development of Cognitive Neuropsychology
The field of cognitive neuroscience includes a wide array of disciplines and professions. For example, a research neuroscientist focuses on investigating the differences in brain structures and functions of individuals with a specific diagnosis and those without. A clinical neuropsychologist assesses patients at a medical center. In your discussion post, answer each of the following questions:
● How do you see cognitive neuroscience benefiting the field of psychology?
● How do you see cognitive neuroscience benefiting the patients who seek mental health services?
● How do you see cognitive neuropsychology benefiting society at large?
● How do you think cognitive neuroscience could affect the primary and secondary education of children and adolescents?
● What historical developments in neuroscience have had the greatest effect on the larger field of psychology? Provide examples to support your thinking.
●

Introduction to Cognitive Neuropsychology
Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Neuropsychology
This course will introduce the neural bases of behavior and examine the brain–behavior relationship. It will focus specifically on children and adolescents. Understanding the neural mechanism’s underlying behavior will help you work with children with developmental or acquired neurological disorders. Knowing neural mechanisms will help you understand the differences between typical and atypical cognitive functions.
Cognition
The term cognition derives from a Latin word that means “to learn” or “to know.” The word commonly refers to a set of cognitive processes. These processes include learning and memory, language, attention, visual–spatial skills, and reasoning. Cognitive scientists conduct research to help them understand these processes. In common use today, the word refers to a set of processes (cognitive processes) that include learning and memory, language, attention, visual-spatial skills, and reasoning. Cognitive scientists conduct research to help them understand these processes.
Cognitive neuroscience examines cognition from the perspective of the relationship between the brain and behavior. Cognitive neuroscience is a branch of neuroscience that bridges biology and psychology. It focuses on understanding the biological bases of behavior. Cognitive neuroscientists investigate the neural substrates underlying cognition. They study how high-level functions are related to the brain’s substructures. High-level functions include language, emotion, and visual object recognition. Cognitive neuroscientists typically work in research settings such as universities, research organizations, and research hospitals. Researchers in the field use behavioral testing (for example, tests of cognitive function) and advanced brain imaging (for example, fMRI and DTI).
Cognitive Neuropsychology
The cognitive neuropsychology (or simply neuropsychology) field is both clinical and experimental. It is a specialty field of clinical psychology. Neuropsychologists typically are interested in the behavioral expression of brain dysfunction. These specialists study the cognitive effects of neurological diseases and brain injuries. Neuropsychology is a specialty within clinical psychology. It focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with impaired brain functioning. The impairment could be from a brain injury, a central nervous system disease, or a psychiatric illness. According to The National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN), the minimal training for a clinical neuropsychologist includes:
- A doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution
- Completion of a year-long predoctoral internship in professional psychology with specialty training in neuropsychology
- A state license to practice psychology
- Two years of formal postdoctoral specialty training in neuropsychology (The American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, 2023)
Neurology is a medical profession focused on the nervous system. Psychiatry is a medical profession focused on mental illness. Psychology is a field with specialty training in cognitive assessment. Neuropsychology is an overlap of all three. Some neuropsychologists do research. However, a neuropsychologist’s primary role is to assess a client’s or a patient’s cognitive strengths and deficits. In doing so, the neuropsychologist can decide and recommend needed appropriate care or interventions.
Interest in understanding the brain–behavior relationship has existed for centuries. Professionals have been able to study the living brain only recently. Scientists historically were limited in how they could examine patients with brain injuries. They could monitor the associated behavioral deficits or assess the damage during an autopsy. Vast technological advancements have enabled professionals to view brain structure and function in vivo. This ability has resulted in tremendous growth in the field and unprecedented knowledge of the brain’s inner workings.

Graduate Discussion Rubric
Overview
Your active participation in the discussions is essential to your overall success this term. Discussion questions will help you make meaningful connections between the course content and the larger concepts of the course. These discussions give you a chance to express your own thoughts, ask questions, and gain insight from your peers and instructor.
Directions
For each discussion, you must create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.
For your initial post, do the following:
- Write a post of 1 to 2 paragraphs.
- In Module One, complete your initial post by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.
- In Modules Two through Ten, complete your initial post by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. of your local time zone.
- Consider content from other parts of the course where appropriate. Use proper citation methods for your discipline when referencing scholarly or popular sources.
For your response posts, do the following:
- Reply to at least two classmates outside of your own initial post thread.
- In Module One, complete your two response posts by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.
- In Modules Two through Ten, complete your two response posts by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. of your local time zone.
- Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in the discussion prompt.
