Assignment 14:Perceptions of Literacy Practices

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to interpret personal meanings and values assigned to literacy in different contexts by young children who are attending an urban elementary school in an after-school program.

Directions:

As the case study reveals, most of the children who participated are experiencing disconnects between home and school literacy practices. Write a reflection addressing the following questions.

What insights have you gained into the personal meanings and values assigned to literacy in different contexts by young children who are attending an urban elementary school in an after-school program?

Discuss some of the disconnects experienced by the participants in the case study and ways in which we as educators can fill that void. What would you do if you had these students in your class?
