Diversity and Health Assessment
As healthcare professionals we work with various kinds of people from different cultures,
a community often advances our health environment spirit. Understanding the race, cultural
heritage, sociological context and sexual orientation of the individual are historically important
(Ball, Dains, Flynn, Salomon & Stewart, 2019).
Case Study
AG is a 54-year-old Caucasian male who was referred to your clinic to establish care
after a recent hospitalization after having a seizure related to alcohol withdrawal. He has
hypertension and a history of alcohol and cocaine abuse. He is homeless and is currently living at
a local homeless shelter. He reports that he is out of his amlodipine 10 mg, which he takes for
hypertension. He reports he is abstaining from alcohol and cocaine but needs to smoke cigarettes
to calm down since he is not drinking anymore.
Cultural factors
The relationship remains patient-oriented and constructive, by Respect's model for
communicating with AG, where RESPECT stands as Statement, Empathy, Help, Relationship,
Explanation, Cultural Competency and Confiance (Ball, Dains, Flynn & Stewart, 2019). By
using the RESPECT model as our interrogation method, we are able to establish a link by being
compassionate and respectful; by empathically questioning him about how he got homeless or
what led to his current situation we can better understand. We can provide AG with a better
understanding or assistance by asking how we can best help him out of his current situation by
asking if his current health, emotional, physical and economic conditions will help him reach the
right public services at his disposal. It is an excellent strategy to accept him for his soberness in
alcoholic beverages and drugs but at the same time to tell him what smoking does for the body
and how he raises his risk of heart diseases, because of nicotine. It is an excellent strategy to
recognize he has a deep desire to change his risk factors. Taïlor, Kendzor, Reitzel, & Businelle
(2016) said Smoking cessation is effective in relationships through sports or other behavioral
therapy (Saeed, Osman & Mohamed, 2019). Offering and providing recommendations based on
evidence to resolve the present health problems and to ensure that everything that you say and do
is kept confidential builds trust and opens up the conversation (Germany, et al., 2019).
