I don't think I define leadership in any specific way, rather it is an ability or
calling given to those capable of guiding others. Those who possess qualities above
the typical person, allowing them to usher in success and inspiration. For me this
isn't just those who act humanely or motivationally, but even those who are capable
of finding and steering paths in direct areas as well. Leadership is art, much like
craftsmanship (carpenters, electricians, etc), musicians etc. It is a craft that has a
never-ending stream of opportunity to improve and learn. Regardless, I think they
all must follow the same path in improving their "art" in the same way musicians
and others improve. Practice, trials, expansion of their areas of expertise, accepting
of failure or rejection but the determination to not give up. A good leader is one
who is adaptable to what is around them, they are always eager to understand,
learn and seek new ways to become better than they were the day before. But a
leader, like a true artist, never falls short of the confidence and mentality to
continue to move forward and succeed even as they improve. It is of course
necessary for a person to require growth and development in order to become a
more inclusive leader. Our society changes as quickly as an industry and a good
leader needs to be willing and able to continuously grow with an open mind in
order to adapt to the needs of both. This would also be my mindset in
coaching/mentoring. That whoever I work with must always enter with an open
mind. To understand that people and society are intertwined with industry and
success. You cannot have one without the other, and such things do not care about
race, gender, sexual preference and religion. A good leader is one who will always
understand their people, include their people, and be respectful of their people's
differences because without it, you won't find your goals end.For the one question
based on our self-assessment. I do believe I am a good leader, having worked in
coaching and HR consulting for some years now, I have been given a wonderful
opportunity to grow alongside everyone I worked with while showing them new
routes to a better workplace. My thoughts in regard to leadership is that is so great
because of so many variables that considered. To define leadership, I would say is
for one to have the ability to acknowledge, understand, and act upon the concerns
and needs of the group(s) being led. Of course, this doesn't mean "agree, give-in,
and give up" but at least a voice is heard. Some of the variables might be within
one's control. For example, what that individual knows to be exclusive qualities and
how they choose to act upon them. Using two extremes opposites could be
something like this (please keep in mind this completely fictional and unbias. These
individuals could be of any ethnic background in the world and gender neutral). So
we have two individuals: One individual grew up and possibly still lives in an
environment where there might be a lot of illegal activities (just keeping it broad
and very generic). The instinct or reason for this individual to lead might be
survival. No choice was presented to them and that's all they've known. Now,
another individual perhaps grew up in a safer environment. There may have been
some (but not much) illegal activities surrounding them. There were definitely
opportunities to further their education and so on. So, this individual can decide if
they would like to consider being a leader of something. It becomes even more of
sticky situation when a leader has little support from those surrounding him. That
in itself could be for many reasons, warranted or not. Leadership means to be able
to influence others in a setting where each individual has a different personality
you’ll have been able to lead and influence. Leadership isn’t just a skill applied in
work setting but also in a religious, organizational or team setting. It is important
to know the difference between a leader and a manager as many get it confused.
Leading people doesn’t require micro-managing or being rough. It involves being
able to influence and guide someone in the right direction or thought. I personally
feel as if I need more in-sight with finishing classes like this to be able to say
“I’m ready and confident” I think I can study more about being in leadership and
how I can apply that to my current career. I personally have just overcame the
hurdles of being able to coach and guide the different personalities we run into that
I use to find “stubborn” but really learned what it was all about before. It also
means taking the time to be compassionate and learn how to see both sides of a
perspective. I personally think I can coach my leaders with diversity and inclusion
by being able to have them support any team builders that include everybody and
what they like for everyone to understand why they like it or why they like it
because of their culture. I also believe it’s important to give back to our
community while practicing diversity and inclusion. Leadership is the ability to take
charge, participate in, and bring innovation to a company, team, or organization.
While a leader is "in charge" they aren't bossy and they don't look down on those
who are subordinate to them. They are willing to get their hands dirty and show
others what they expect from them rather than telling them what to do. To improve
one's leadership skills, one must be willing to acknowledge that they themselves are
constantly learning new ways to communicate and understand that what works for
one situation, person, or culture may not always work for another. I agree with my
self-assessment pertaining to my ability to be a leader in the workplace because I
have already seen that I am a healthy and positive leader both within my own
business and while employed by someone else in a managerial position. I know that
I am a good leader within a corporation because when I went on maternity leave,
not only did I receive multiple requests and inquiries from my subordinates and
superiors asking when I would be back, but when my youngest child was having
health issues that required my constant attention, the store I had been running had
to close due to my absence and those who had worked with me resigning when
they learned that I was not going to be able to return. The thing about leadership
is that it is constantly changing, constantly adapting to situations and individuals, no
one situation is exactly the same as the next and the same can be said of people.
In order to be a good leader, growth and development are essential to the loyalty
and cooperation of those for whom you are responsible. My advice to new leaders
would be to remember that there is not always one solution to any given problem,
that each person is different and learn in different styles, and that people will have
more respect for you as a leader if you are willing to be flexible, reliable, and
trustworthy. Value diversity is the reason for the variety of ways in which the same
task or meeting could be conducted in many ways. The varied difference in
approach increases the potential of employees and lets a company come up with
better solutions. Women hold only a few of the top leadership positions as
compared to men against the research that shows women are viewed as more
transformational leaders because of the patriarchy in a society where men are given
more importance since their birth. Still there exists families who will keep boys
above girls not equal as they believe girls eventually will marry and be a part of
some other family whereas boys are treated as an asset. Therefore, better education,
upbringing, and training are given to them leading to leadership positions. To
change the scenario girls must be educated and given equal opportunities as boys
only then they could compete with men for leadership positions. To foster great
inclusivity, one must maintain a balance between rational and emotional aspects of
the company. The rational approach must be that your task meets the deadline, and
it is up to the mark of the levels of client's requirements as well as better than
your competitors whereas the emotional balance must be maintained by giving
enough time to the inclusive members of the company. The task must be divided
by the criteria of the requirement, or the time is given to do it so that it can be
assigned to the team of inclusive members of the rational members of the company.
I personally define leadership as someone who shows initiative to want to lead
others towards a common goal or objective. Leadership is very much so an art
form. Everyone’s personal style of leadership is a little bit different than others just
like art. Most people like to lead others the way that they prefer to be lead
themselves. Based on the results from the self-assessment I think I have the skills
and personality type to lead others effectively in the workplace. My highest scores
were personal stability, productivity, self- management, communication, and
teamwork. I think when it comes to leadership every day is an opportunity for
growth and knowledge. In a way leadership is similar to practicing medicine, we
never will truly know everything about leadership, and it is constantly changing.
Learning different inclusive leadership skills will allow you to reach and lead a
wider array of followers that respond to different leadership methods. Coaches and
mentors are great examples of professional leaders who challenge you to step out
of your comfort zone and try different things. When we step out of our comfort
zone to engage with others we often step closer towards the person we are trying
to reach. Merriam-Webster (n.d.), defines leadership as “the office or position of a
leader.” Also, it is defined as having the ability to lead. However, according to
Hughes (2022), leadership is not a position, but rather the interactions between the
leader and followers in a given situation. To be a good leader, I believe it takes
the expertise of the position held, the ability to communicate effectively,
interpersonal skills, and open-mindedness. Most importantly, an effective leader
should be able to coach and mentor his followers. I feel to improve one’s “art of
leadership” requires a sense of humility to welcome constructive feedback. Then not
only would you improve yourself but, you'll be able to successfully, coach others.
This presents a greater influence on the followers and helps them carry out their
goals. Of course, this requires training or some form of education. Therefore, in
addition to leadership development courses, you can take advantage of career
advancement and mentoring programs, provided by some organizations. At my
current place of employment, I had the opportunity to participate in the career
advancement program. It was an excellent program that presented college course
materials on leadership development. I scored an 82/100 on the self-assessment.
Although I have been placed in leadership roles, I don’t feel it is best for me.
Leadership is good when you have great followers who are not Passive, Pragmatist,
or Alienated . When conflict and or lack of accountability is a concern, I’d rather
not have to deal with the stress that follows. As for now, I will continue to aspire
to be an Exemplary follower. Yes, I feel people need growth and development to
become more inclusive because most biases stem from stereotyping about age,
gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation. So, educating individuals will reveal the truth
and possibly change the preference and remove discrimination. I believe creating an
organizational culture that promotes diversity and inclusion has benefits like cohesion
and creativity. So, to coach or speak to it I’d first educate individuals about
stereotyping, equality, and emotional intelligence. The latter is needed to develop
self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, etc. My current place of employment often
hosts diversity, inclusion, and equality conferences with guest speakers. They even
encourage us to join resource groups to support women and learn about other
cultures. It’s another great way to educate and bring about a much-needed change.
A leader I believe should lead by example, it is someone who can teach you and
inspire you to reach goals. I believe a leader should be someone who can
communicate well and be able to understand others. A method to lead is to get to
know your team, communication is a key for success. Support people's ideas and
be flexible with other people ideas and feedbacks.
According to survey I scored moderate, and I agree with this because I mix my
personal feeling when it comes to communicating. Sometimes I think I can a little
too honest when it comes to sharing ideas and I speak from my emotions other
than think aa leader. I also see myself having others take important decisions other
than me taking initiative to make them and be firm in my decisions.
I do agree leaders need special skills and grow in every aspect of leadership. I
have worked with people whose role was not as leader, but have taken initiative to
lead, but definitely knowledge can provide a better outcome.
Being a mentor, I think should understand different personalities and behaviors and
now how to successfully communicate and give guidance. To me, leadership is the
ability to lead a person or group of people using knowledge and skills learned over
time to reach goal or objectives together in an effective manner. Providing direction
in a way that is clear and concise, to achieve goals or deadlines in a timely
manner. When problems or issues arise, finding solutions that are constructive and
have a positive outcome for all. Often times we hear of managers who direct
employees based on what they want. To be effective at leadership, it is important
to look at the desired results, assess the tools or personnel needed to accomplish
the task and get the correct resources. Once the basic resources are established
provide clear expectations with goals and accountability. Gather the team frequently
and provide opportunity for all in the group/team to have a chance to present ideas
and findings. People who feel appreciated or part of a team tend to be more
productive and enthusiastic in group setting.
I was genuinely surprised that I scored fairly high in leadership skills. For years I
have always said I am not a leader. I would rather do work behind the scenes and
contribute to the team overall. Looking back over the last few years in my current
position, I now see that I have been mentoring other team members and sharing
experience and knowledge so others can excel. I have always said we are all in
this together. Just last week, the Purchasing Manager for my division asked if I had
ever thought of being mentored for leadership as she believed I had qualities and
characteristics of a leader. I didn't think much about it until I took the assessment
.I believe that leaders who have taken time to develop and grow skills do make
better leaders. Learning never truly stops. In addition to basic knowledge about the
work he or she does, basic skills and principals change over time. New techniques
are introduced that facilitate equity and inclusion along with ideas on how to keep
people engaged and provide effective leadership in a changing society. To effectively
mentor equity and inclusion in leadership you have to lead by example. People
come from all different backgrounds, cultures, skill sets etc., and it is important to
treat each one the same. Embrace the differences of everyone and work together as
a team. When adversity arises, it needs to be addressed so it doesn't grow into
hostility or anger. Finally, I think that each person on a team should feel they are
being treated the same and that they are appreciated for what they bring to a team.
Personally, I would define leadership as the ability to demonstrate my passion for a
group or cause and inspire others to not only feel the same way but to work for
the same purpose, mission, or vision for that group or cause. Leadership is
definitely an art. In order to inspire an individual and then a whole group, you
have to be able to relate to people and draw them in to pay attention and then
see your passion. People understand and see things in many different levels and
ways. A leader needs to utilize any method in the art field, whether it be
creativity, visual presentations, speech, or even theatrical. It just depends on the
situation and group type. But to be able to do this is definitely an art.
Reflecting on the self-assessment, I believe I do have what it takes to be a leader.
In fact, I have probably been doing it for many years. The thing is I do not see
leadership as being in charge or the "one" with all the answers. I have been
leading my children, my family, my church groups, and even in the workplace. But
not because I sought to be the leader, just because I care about people and want
the best for them and what I am passionate about. I love my kids and am
passionate about helping them be the best they can be and respect others. I also
learn from my mistakes and do not hide them from those around me. It helps in
the growth and being an example. We definitely need growth and development to
become more inclusive leaders. If we do not grow, where are we leading them to.
To lead we have to keep walking or everyone following will stop when we do, if
that makes sense. In order to mentor aspiring leaders to appreciate diversity and
inclusion, I think you would have demonstrate it in your leadership traits. You
would have to make sure it is understood that in your group, everyone is on the
same team and respect is given so it is expected to be received. When situations
arise for learning, it should be handled as a growth opportunity and be handled as
discretely as possible. No one appreciates being called out. Again, if you give
respect from the leadership, it will flow through and the cycle will continue. That
is a leadership calling. Leadership is a savvy concoction of interaction that compels
others to act in a certain way, which includes clear communication, motivation, and
setting the tone and direction for various situations.
The art of leadership flourishes on the ability to work well with others in different
capacities to achieve goals. That is hard to do if you despise teamwork or feel like
you work better alone. Immersing yourself into a group project where you are not
the leader but have to be committed to the outcome gives you a better
understanding of not only helping others accomplish a goal together, but additionally
what skills are necessary to earn the right to lead a group with the support of the
subordinates and give them the confidence to complete the task.
According to the survey, I am moderately positioned to be a leader. Often times I
step back from leadership roles, because although I am confident about the goal and
how to reach it, I struggle with being charismatic enough to compel people to
follow my lead without affecting as a dictator. I highly question my own direction
and I am generally a perfectionist, changing direction on a whim if I see a better
path to achievement. That can be confusing for others and ruin my credibility.
Anyone can benefit from leadership growth and development. You may be called on
to be a leader with no notice and need to pull off a hefty goal. This training can
help you communicate the needs of the project or task to be completed in a very
succinct and easy to understand way so that you immediately get the help you need
from the right people without wasting time putting people to work just for the sake
of teamwork. You have to be able to identify strengths in others and utilize them
to the advantage of the team.
Communication is key. Understanding the strengths of your team and communicating
needs to them efficiently will save time and creates efficiency with the right people
working on the right things. I define leadership as having the skills and ability to
look out for the health and welfare on their people they’re in charge of. Leadership
must be willing to provide growth in each individual and have them strive to be
the best they can be. Leadership means you must set the example and lead from
the front and placing your pride aside and be willing to get your hands dirty and
never ask anyone to do anything that you’re not willing to do yourself. Leadership
is building a team to accomplish the overall goal. Some methods that come to mind
to the extent that leadership in art is being flexible and able to communicate and
being able to assist people regardless of the time or issue. Another way is always
sought improvement through trainings and mentoring programs to be an effective
leader. I agree with the self-assessment, and I know that I’m ready to lead in the
workplace due to having the experience of being a leader within the military and
workplace in the past. I have obtained the knowledge, training, skills to be a
leader. I think people need growth and development to become inclusive leaders.
Due to the changes today, leaders need to be able to adapt and apply those skills
to help their people grow on the job and in their persona life.Diversity is very
important for leaders to understand the history and backgrounds of all the different
cultures that can be used as a positive. Diversity brings different mindsets and ideas
to accomplish mission and team goals that may have not been thought of. Our
organization host a diversity inclusion seminar each month to celebrate different
cultures to provide awareness that has been successful. I define leadership as having
the skills and ability to look out for the health and welfare on their people they’re
in charge of. Leadership must be willing to provide growth in each individual and
have them strive to be the best they can be. Leadership means you must set the
example and lead from the front and placing your pride aside and be willing to get

training, skills to be a leader .I think people need growth and development to

I define leadership as the ability to direct individuals and groups of employees in
dedicated environments, form a cohesive bond to learn, grow and collaborate with
each other. To the extent that leadership is an art, what methods come to mind for
improving one’s “art of leadership” now? A great leader will adapt and use
methods to influence, engage, coach and communicate effectively to achieve goals.
Through continued use of these techniques, leaders will increase their confidence,
listening skills, plan appropriately, and create a supportive workplace environment.
After the assessment, my belief that I have what it takes to lead in the workplace
in good. I do feel that everyone has a level of skills that set them apart, and with
increased learning, you can develop into a great leader.I think entry level and
seasoned people need growth and development to become more inclusive leaders.
Teaching skills to become inclusive involve understanding how the different traits of
ethnicities work to collaborate and complete tasks as one entity. Education is the
perfect tool to coach or mentor aspiring leaders to better appreciate diversity and
inclusion. My current employer has created an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusive
(ED&I) committee, to teach employees the value of diversity and inclusiveness.
Learning how ethnicities and their historical traits are adapted helps to appreciate
how diversity and inclusion enhances the workplace environment. By Definition,
leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization, the office
or position of a leader, capacity to lead, or the act or an instance of leading.
Leadership is about motivating a group of people to use teamwork and accomplish
a common goal. Leadership captures the essentials of being able and prepared to
inspire others. Successful leadership is built upon philosophies both innovative and
plagiarized that are successfully interconnected to others in a way that involves
them sufficient to act as the leader wants them to act. A leader inspires others to
act while simultaneously directing the way that they act. They must be personable
enough for others to follow their orders, and they must have the critical thinking
skills to know the best way to use the resources at an organization's disposal. The
terms leadership and management tend to be used interchangeably, but they're not
the same. Leadership requires traits that extend beyond management duties. Both
leaders and managers have to manage the resources at their disposal, but true
leadership requires more. I would define leadership as the ability to lead a person
or group of persons in a variety of environments such as the workplace and
personal life. To the extent that leadership is an art, a method to improve
leadership can be to study other leaders and how they handle situations so that one
can adapt their style and gain new insight and skills. After taking the self-
assessment, I believe I have what it takes to be a leader because I show
competence and the ability to communicate and understand others well. However,
my level of focus can improve. I do believe that people need growth and
development to be more inclusive leaders because an inclusive leader must have a
good understanding of diversity and communications among people. I would mentor
an aspiring leader to learn to communicate with people. I feel that communication
is key to unlocking a whole subsection of leadership development. When one knows
how to talk and listen to others, people can have better understandings of each
other. The result is the trainee is viewed as more credible and competent. In my
personal experience leadership is the ability to lead an individual or individuals in
a positive way they promotes some type of growth. Rather its in work life or
personal life, just having the ability to help grow a person. I do look at leadership
as an art because you have to be a person that can play many roles and also a
person that can separate your work from your personal life. That task alone is
easier said than done. After taking my self-assessment the results were pretty much
what I expected which was that I present the qualities of being a leader. I agree
with the assessment 100% mostly in the teamwork and communication fields. Im
defiantly the type of person that if I'm working on the team I care more about our
outcome of the task as a group rather than just my part of the work. Im not the
type of person who would boast about what I did. It's a "us" thing because we're
a team. I do believe that people need growth and development to become good
leader. No one person was born perfect or with all the right answers. As a leader
if you can acknowledge the areas you need growth in and then take the time out
to educate yourself on those topics. That alone shows that you have the potential
to be a great leader. I define leadership as a skill that benefits not only the person
that possesses this skill but also benefits those that are surrounded by this
individual. Leadership is a skill that allows an individual to lead, guide and
influence others to learn and grow. I believe it takes a selfless person to be a great
leader, they do not just think of themselves, they sincerely want the best for their
subordinates and like to see them succeed. In completing my self-assessment, the
results reveal that I have what it takes to lead in the workplace, and I have to say
that I agree. I have been lucky to work with and be mentored by great leaders.
They guided me through the beginning of my career and I would like to do the
same for others. I want to help my work team reach their short and long-term
employment goals. I can be a resource for them and assist them to get the training
and experience they need to be successful in their careers. If employees are happy
in their careers, we all benefit including the organization we work for.I think people
need growth and development to become inclusive leaders, without a broad
knowledge people tend to be closed-minded and siloed in their thoughts. I would
coach others to have an open mind to diversity, working alongside people with
different backgrounds can teach us a different way of accomplishing our goals. A
leader is someone who has the ability to inspire other individuals or groups while
at the same time directing them to do what needs to be done to accomplish the
goals. Improving ones art of leadership can be done in multiple different ways. The
first thing that comes to mind is ensuring you have a positive attitude. If you lead
with a positive attitude, then the people you are leading will be positive when
working on their tasks. Based on the results of the self-assessment, I do believe I
have what it takes to be a leader. I have had much experience leading both in my
current career and within my own business. When leading a team, it is important
that you are open minded and listen to all points of view. You must be willing to
jump in the trenches and show your subordinates that you are willing and able to
work right alongside them. Growth and development are a constant part of
everything we do in life and leadership is no different. As the world changes and
grows we have to learn to adapt how we lead.
Diversity within a team, makes a stronger team. I feel that a big part of leadership
is coaching and teaching people how to become a leader so they also can meet
their personal goals. When I think of the word leadership, I think of someone
who's resilient, someone who looks after the welfare of others, someone who isn't
ashamed to go after what they want, and someone who's a teacher. Some methods
that come to mind for improving one's are of leadership would be to take
management and leadership classes periodically to brush up on leadership skills, and
to use every day as an opportunity of improvement. I believe I have what it takes
to lead in the workplace because I have a heart for people . I enjoy helping others
, but in the same instincts I can discern when discipline is needed. I also enjoy
finding ways of improvement not only for myself but for those who work around
me. People need growth and development to become more inclusive leaders. This is
needed because the world we live in today is constantly changing you have to
purposely seek others' perspectives, and this promotes change. I could coach or
mentor aspiring leaders to better appreciate diversity and inclusion by incorporating
outside resource groups to demonstrate how this can be done based on the programs
they provide. I would also host classes once a month to help everyone see and feel
that everyone plays a part, and everyone is important. Leadership to me is the
ability to guide/lead an individual(s) to achieve results both in a personal level or
a work environment. Through that, you not only do some sort of mentoring, but
establish accountability along the way which will help shape a better productive
person. Being able to communicate efficiently and clearly comes to mind when
considering a method for leadership improvement. Tackling hard conversations are
part of growth both for the leader and subordinate so making sure you communicate
everything with a goal in mind is also helpful. Regardless how the conversations
go, you have to also be able to listen to the other party as that will gain trust
from them to which in return helps you be able to advance in your mentoring or
coaching. At our work, we have frequent Professional Development days throughout
the month, at least one if not more, where we focus on how to be more leaders
in our everyday interactions with our peers along with being more inclusive with
diversity. During these days, we even have scenarios and role plays to help capture
possible interactions. They can be corny at times, but do eventually showcase some
great ideas on improvement. I tend to listen and just take away what I see fit to
my persona and apply adequately. I would define leadership as someone who
influences or guide others whether it is a group of people, a team, or a company.
When I think of leadership, I think of someone who has a good, positive impact
on someone or a team. I think of someone that you could look up to. A method
that comes to mind for improving one's "art of leadership" is to lead by example.
If you are the leader, you want others to follow you so it is best that you do the
right thing so that they will follow. My results show that I have moderate
leadership skills which I agree. I believe I have what it takes to be a leader, but
I am not sure if I would want that much pressure or responsibility depending on
what I am leading or who I am leading. I do believe that people need growth and
development to become more inclusive leaders because it can make them more
successful. I could coach or mentor aspiring leaders to better appreciate diversity
and inclusion by leading by example. If I am showing that diversity is important
and making sure everyone is included while being a leader, then someone who is
aspiring to be a leader could follow in my footsteps. I would define leadership as
setting a precedent or a positive role for others, including yourself. Leadership
should motivate others to better their performance and apply themselves where they
are positively contributing to a team (i.e., work team, family team, or athletic team).
However, our textbook defines leadership as a complex phenomenon involving a
leader, a follower, and a situation which influences others in achieving a common
goal.
In my opinion, there is an art to leadership, and there are a select few that take
on this role with pride and honour. If you want to be a leader, or want to improve
on your leadership skillsI would recommend conducting the following:
Communication is key! You must learn how to bean authority figure without
commanding respect. If you can positively communicate with your team
members, you will earn respect, and a support system for your decision-
making.
Be consistent and timely! If you are researching a problem in your team, it
is very important to treat each situation consistently and act accordingly. The
best method is to be proactive and not reactive to a situation.
In my self-assessment, my total score was 93/100, suggesting that I have good
leadership skills. My personal stability was 9/10, showing that I can keep others on
track and focused on goals that we are pursuing together. My productive was 14/15,
proving that I am dependable and effective, using our time and resources well. My
self-management was a 15/15, suggesting that I can manage my emotions and hold
myself accountable. For boundary setting, my score was 10/10 which shows that I
can establish boundaries to avoid burnout. My communication was a 13/15, which
tells me that I could do a little bit better to get in that 95% range! My work
quality was 8/10, showing that I can get distracted by others, but not so I won’t
complete work. And finally, my teamwork score was 24/25, showing that we are
modeling how to be successful as a group, not just an individual. Based on my
scores, I am confident that I have what it takes to lead a workplace.I believe that
everyone could always use growth and development to become a more inclusive
leader. In my current organization, I regulate annual trainings, and some quarterly
onesthis ensures that everyone is continuing to perfect their skills as leaders.
Everyone should consistently be trying to specialize in their skills and become better
motivators/influencers.As an HR Director, I try to mentor my HR team daily to
appreciate diversity and inclusion company wide. It is very important that we
celebrate all cultures and can relate to one another on some sort of level. We
mandate sensitivity trainings, cultural trainings, webinars, and attend one seminar a
year on communication. I define leadership as getting people to do what you want
because they want to. No threatening, no transactions, just doing the thing you want
because you asked them to.The biggest improvement to leadership skills comes from
exercising empathy, treating people with respect, and not waiting to address
employee concerns. I usually recommend James Hunter's "The Servant" to my
employees because he touches on all of these subjects.I have been leading since
2002, so I definitely think I have what it takes to be a leader. I have definitely
made mistakes along the way, but the teams I have lead have all been successful,
and more importantly, those folks that worked for me went on to be good leaders
in their own right. Development is important for any skill, and leading is no
exception. You need practice, and lots of feedback. Leaning on the more
experienced people around you can get you through hard times as a leader. Need
the team to stay late? Here is what I did when my team had to do it. Understaffed
and you need more from the people you have? This is what we did to cover our
gaps.If I was coaching an aspiring leader about inclusion and diversity, I would
suggest they participate in any local organizations they could. Volunteer leadership
still counts as leadership. My company is very large, so we have corporate and
local inclusion and diversity elements. I bring my new supervisors along with me
to meetings and have them help out with events. The textbook defines leadership as
a complex phenomenon involving the leader, the follower, and the situation to
influence others in achieving a goal. I define leadership as an act performed by an
individual or a group of people who can effectively motivate, and more people to
achieve the same goal, which is beneficial to the company, employees, and the
people the company serves.Art of leadership is designed to teach and provide
leaders with directly related, easily applied tools and techniques that can be
implemented within any corporate culture, The "Art of Leadership" is designed to
assist leaders with making adjustments based on the current situation. The "Art of
Leadership" is designed to assist leaders to recognize that all situations must be
addressed, but not always in the same way. After completing the self-assessment I
do believe I have what it takes to lead in the workplace. I have scored high on
each section of the assessment. I have proven myself as an effective leader in the
workplace on several occasions. I was classified as an effective leader because I
was always willing to listen to my team and value their input. I have not had
formal training on being a leader, I guess you could say I am one of those "Born
Leaders".Growth and Development are vital to becoming a more inclusive leader
because like any other art/science training is a must. The business world is an ever-
changing place and in order to grow and develop training is a must.I would coach
or mentor aspiring leaders to better appreciate diversity and inclusion by encouraging
them to spend time with their team to gain insight into the differences and learn
to value what each person has to offer, despite their differences. Different does not
mean bad, it is just different. The textbook says it best, leadership is widely argued
and most people disagree on its definition, the text says its a complex phenomenon
involving the leader, the followers and the situation, so that means leadership can
be defined differently based on dynamics. So leadership is the process of
influencing an organized group towards achieving its goals.Leadership is both an art
and a science. The art of leadership is all about the skill in deploying the proper
tactics in a situation to influence others in achieving a goal. Certain situations call
for certain measures and the art of leadership may show you how to move and
pivot throughout them; and not use a one-case scenario for all situations.I have
what it takes to lead in the workplace. I've combined structure, organization and
high adaptivity to be successful. I can bring poise and structure and still be agile.
Lead when needed and scale back when others strengths rise to get the overall best
result from a group. Leadership is about growing, concepts change so much you
have to be 'up with the times and techniques'. Leaders need ongoing training to be
inclusive. I just completed USF's DEI training in October of last year and learned
so much and have a greater appreciation for diversity and inclusion that is needed
when people work together. You really do get the best from diversity. Leadership
to me is the act of taking on managing through influence rather than a dictatorships
and understanding the dynamics of a team effort rather than benefits of the
individual.Leadership is definitely an art and not every manager is a leader. A
leader can be just a part of work team, not necessarily the manager of the
department. As I mentioned, it's understanding how to use influence and being
tactful on communication. It's not easy to always comprehend the difference of
telling someone what to do rather than showing and having them understand the
importance of the task, while feeling valued for it. I myself have had to learn the
difference. I believe it comes with time and it also depends on each manager's
viewpoint. What is most important to that individual? The growth of their team as
a whole or themselves as an individual?I think I have learned about leadership more
so now that I'm in management. I love to see individuals excel and grow within
their career. That's what is important to me. I continue learning everyday, but I
always focus around ways to influence and strategize especially around diversity and
inclusion. The only way to get better at anything is to develop. Find what is
lacking and apply methods to improve those opportunities. If I had to coach or
mentor aspiring leaders on how to better appreciate diversity and inclusion, I would
explain how important it is to have multiple viewpoints. Every persons opinion
matters and you might be able to be successful with just your own view for a
short time; however, to be more successful you have to look around you and grasp
little bits of information from everyone. That's really the only way to grow, to not
be stuck in the same mindset and understand how wonderful it is to have diversity
and inclusion be a part of the workspace.
Here are some of the characteristics of leadership:
Leadership stems from social influence, not authority or power
Leadership requires others, and that implies they don’t need to be “direct reports”
No mention of personality traits, attributes, or even a title; there are many styles,
many paths, to effective leadership .It includes a goal, not influence with no
intended outcome
