NTFS
Microsoft Windows uses NTFS (New Technology File System). It allows users to name,
organize, and store files. It also can encrypt and decrypt data, files, and folders. NTFS lets you
compress your files which allow more storage on your device and enables permissions on
specific files and folders so you can restrict access for certain people. NTFS' focus is the
consistency of the file system so if an unfortunate event such as a power outage happens, you can
quickly restore your data.
FAT32
FAT32 is another file system. It is more outdated than NTFS. It can only support files
that are up to 4GB and volumes up to 2TB. Also, it is not a journaling file system, which makes
corruption more likely to happen. Unlike NTFS, it only has shared permissions and offers no file
compression options. FAT32 is made more for removable devices.
NTFS
Administrative View:
It is great to be able to set restrictions on who can view/change anything in some folders
and files. I can read/write any folders or files and I can take ownership of them, which means I
can change any permissions on the file or folder whenever I please, regardless of any existing
permissions that protect the file or folder. I can feel safe and secure about having my laptop
connected to a public WI-FI because NTFS not only encrypts your data, it also does not let
random users view it.
User View:
If the user is an employee that is trying to access certain files or folders and does not have the
permission on the computer, it could take a lot of time to find the boss, ask him to take time to
grant the user the permissions they need to finish the task they were assigned. However, it is
great that the administrator can share the folder or file and grant you full access as well.
FAT32
Unfortunately, FAT32 only allows shared file or folder permissions. It also does not offer
file compression and it is not a journaling file system. FAT32 is susceptible to fragmentation and
is insecure because it does not offer encryption.
