Phobias and Anxiety Disorder
PSYC 8012 - Psychopathology
University of Cincinnati
Anxiety and panic disorder can have some of the same symptoms, but
a panic disorder can come on unexpectedly and have symptoms of
sweating, chest pains, nausea. Anxiety disorder is usually something
that come on gradually, from stressing or worrying over certain
situation. Having a phobia or an extreme ear of something can bing on
a panic or anxiety attack. Anxiety disorder usually come from
threatened and stressful emotion, Panic disorder are not always caused
by stress and can happen at anytime without warning. Anxiety can
range from mild to severe, where as panic disorders are usually
disruptive and severe. Having a phobia will often lead to having a
panic attack. I have experienced panic attacks before and I thought I
was having a heart attack. The two carry very similar signs.
On a daily basis, many of experience stress from our workplace to our
personal lives. Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness. Stress is our way of dealing biologically with the
situations encountered based on a fight or flight response. Stress can
lead to heart disease, hypertension, acute stress, or anxiety disorders
(Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014). Anxiety occurs when individuals
are apprehensive about the current or future situations. They may feel
immediate anxiety based on which could have a significant impact on
the person's life style and health. Panic disorders are based on fear.
When a situation occurs because of potential danger or feeling
terrified, anxiety or panic occurs. Phobias are fears about things or
events. Phobias are experienced based on an uncomfortable or
frightening situation. A phobia may occur based on being caught in an
elevator with other people (claustrophobia). Natural phobias consist of
thunder storms or heights. Phobias of one type or another are normal
(Curtis, Magee, Eaton, Wittchen, & Kessler, 1998). Phobias can be a
learned behavior based some incident may have occurred or
evolutionary simply based on objects, people, or situations we have
come to fear (Butcher et al., 2014).
Professionals who treat mental health conditions base a diagnosis on
definitions found in the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, 5th edition," known as the DSM-5. Though anxiety and
panic attacks may feel the same at times, the subtle differences
outlined in this handbook help identify each.
The DSM-5 uses the term panic attack to describe the hallmark
features associated with the condition known as panic disorder.
However, panic attacks may occur in other psychiatric disorders and it
is possible to have a panic attack if you have no disorder.
The term "anxiety attack" is not defined in the DSM-5. Rather,
"anxiety" is used to describe a core feature of several illnesses
identified under the headings of anxiety disorder, obsessive
compulsive disorders, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders. I
suffer from anxiety attacks. They are some reasons why a person
would have these disorders. One reason a person can be overwhelmed
by fear or excitement.
Some teachers have diagnosis some of the students that may have
ADHD. With this kind of diagnosis the students can be very
disruptive, distracted, or very fidgety will be known for ADHD. Not
all diagnosis is done correctly. In the film I saw that the parents were
requested to comply with the information that the teachers of children
and psychologist. I have a memory when my child was in school they
wanted to test her to see why she was not learning like the other
children. I was not happy about the way they were trying to explain
that my child has a learning disability, I told them they are crazy my
child is just fine. The reason they thought she had a problem, my
daughter refused to write in ink and she wrote so small you had to
read her writing with a magnifying glass. I felt this was normal
behavior. All of these pharmaceutical companies making these drugs
for these children are not making children to think for themselves. I
have seen a child that was on this drug and he was not coherent after
the drug wore off you can see life in him. I am glad I did not allow
them to drug my child. She is very successful today.
Phobias are not inherit, neither are panic attacks--at least they don't
think so. In the past, phobias were seen as a sign of weakness of one's
character; therefore, many people were reluctant to admit it and
people were often misdiagnosed.
Phobias are irrational fears, some disabling. These fears are brought
on when confronted by specific objects or situations which often times
shifts them into fight or flight mode. Some phobias experience panic
attacks. Symptoms include, but are not limited to nausea, heart
racing/pounding, sweaty palms, dizziness, sick.
Anxiety is more complex and inherit. Symptoms can be crippling and
haunt them day and night-year after year. In their most severe form is
just as severe and even more disabling than most of the chronic
physical disorders. The physical symptoms of these psychological
fears are powerful--so severe that many medical personnel mistake a
panic attack for a heart attack.
People with anxiety are constantly thinking negative thoughts,
whether confronted or not.
Panic disorders are recurrent, unexpected panic attacks that often
create a sense of terror and a lot of other physical symptoms that shift
into fight or flight and do not last very long, minutes. Panic disorders
develop fear of experiencing another attack and an avoidance of
certain situations for fear they may have another attack.
Larissa is a special little girl. Although she has OCD, she seems to
have it all together. I truly enjoyed watching and listening to her. She
diagnosed herself, she understands it, she has these fears but is not
afraid (if that makes sense), and she has accepted it.
What I found truly interesting was when it was explained that the
purpose of the compulsion is to either deal with the negative thought
or make it go away. In other words, the compulsion is not the disease
it is the medicine that helps ease it.
Secret Fears: The Nature of Things
Panic disorder is something that is brought on suddenly and has an
extreme affect. Anxiety disorder is something that has gradually built
up. They both share some of the same symptoms like elevated heart
rate and shortness of breath. Phobias can be caused by a frightening
experience in childhood up to early adulthood and may also be created
by overwhelming amounts of stress.
According to the film," Anxiety Disorder, Acute distress Disorder and
PTSD are associated with a traumatic event." In coping with the
situations one have encountered there are periods of feeling hopeless,
amnesia, having flashbacks, dreams, and being in a state of a daze are
common. The avoidance of stimuli that reminds them of the event and
confusion about their experience and shutting down to avoid being
overwhelmed are way in which they cope on a day to day basis. The
inability to hold a steady job, ability to parent, difficulty sleeping, and
irritability are some of the effects of a traumatic experience. As I have
shared in other post, my daughter was a victimized and is suffering
from mental health disorders, to include anxiety, depression and
PTSD. Having a person to talk to is recommended and she calls me
everyday, two to three times a day. These events and disabilities takes
a toll on support systems but are much needed for the person
suffering.
According to the video acute distress disorder is usually caused after a
traumatic experience. In the video, the female, Vicky, was assaulted
and began to show symptoms of acute stress disorder shortly after the
event. Acute disorder persistently reexperience: recurrent images,
thoughts, dreams, illusions, flashback episodes or a sense of reliving
the experience, or distress on exposure to reminders of the tragic event
(Films Media Group, 2002). Posttraumatic stress disorder is said to be
suffered, usually by persons that have served in the military. Speaking
about the experience is an important part of dealing with the
experience which has affected them. According to the video, males in
this case suffer in their personal everyday lives. The disorder affects
their relationships and work performance.
The diagnosis of ADHD by teachers who are trying to control their
classroom and a child is fidgety, disruptive, easily distracted can be
diagnosed with ADHD. Some significant points were made regarding
"misdiagnoses and parents told that their child needs medications or
will have to be transferred to a different school." Parents in the film
were forced to" comply with the recommendations of the child's
teacher and school psychologist" When thinking back to the 1960's
when I was growing up supervision was not described as
"micromanaging as it is today" In my beliefs of pharmaceutical
companies profiting from over prescribing these drugs, and the ease of
teachers being able to control their classroom were major contributing
factors. As a child's environment have influences on their behavior, so
does the imbalance of required academic level. In my opinion parents
should be able to discipline their children with abuse, hold them
accountable and follow through with expectations of appropriate
behavior.
Diagnosing a child with ADD seem to be too voluntary in these days
and time. When a child is active, not able to focus, sitting down, and
be disruptive they can easily be label. They want to give them Ritalin
just to make them calm, and this medication is cause other adverse
effects. For example Corey, took a gun to school and held his class
hostage and was not even aware of this. There are other problems and
issues that cause a child to react in an over active manner. This is sad
that a child can't be a child without being labeled. My son was hyper,
when he was in school, they wanted to have him tested for ADD, I
refused. In my opinion if a child can focus in one situation and not
another this child does not have ADD. I enjoyed the statement that
society doesn't want to raise children they want to have little
controlled adults. We have children that have energy and creativity
that they cannot control, instead of letting that knowledge flow; these
children are being medicated and labeled. There should really be more
testing done before diagnosing a child with ADD, and these
diagnosis's should be made by mental health professionals, not
teachers. These labels follow your children for a life time. It was so
sad that this woman child was taken from her because the schools felt
that he needed to be on Ritalin, she was pressured by the schools and
harassed by the police.
On a daily basis, many of experience stress from our workplace to our
personal lives. Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or

Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.

Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.
Professionals who treat mental health conditions base a diagnosis on

diagnosed with ADHD.
Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.

Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.

On a daily basis, many of experience stress from our workplace to our

confusion about their experience and shutting down to avoid being
overwhelmed are way in which they cope on a day to day basis. The
inability to hold a steady job, ability to parent, difficulty sleeping, and
irritability are some of the effects of a traumatic experience. As I have
shared in other post, my daughter was a victimized and is suffering
from mental health disorders, to include anxiety, depression and
Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.
According to the film," Anxiety Disorder, Acute distress Disorder and

situations one have encountered there are periods of feeling hopeless,

would have these disorders.
Many times we are able to cope with the stress whether
it is through our resilience, immediate support group, or medication or
mindfulness.
