engaged in these experiential learning opportunities will participate in indirect care experiences
that focus on application of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Master’s
Essentials, the Graduate Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Competencies,
and/or the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Competencies.K These
experiences will be offered in an actual or simulated practice setting, and will involve engaging
students in completing assignments that are of an experiential nature, to enhance their
knowledge and application of leadership and management concepts, principles, skills, and
competencies.KK
Clinical experiences (experiential learning) are graded on a “Satisfactory”/ “Unsatisfactory”
basis.K A final clinical evaluation grade of “Satisfactory” is required for successful completion of
all courses that include a clinical component, regardless of the grade earned in the didactic
(theory) portion of the course.K If a student does not achieve a passing grade in the didactic
(theory) aspect of the course and a “Satisfactory” grade in the clinical component of the course,
the student will receive a final grade of “F” (failing) for the entire course, and will be required to
re-take the course (including both didactic [theory] and clinical aspects of the course), subject to
the program’s re-take policy.K See MSN Program Preceptorship Manual for additional guidance
regarding preceptorship experiences.K
To successfully complete this course, you will be required to precept with a nurse leader to
complete some of the assignments. You should plan on spending 16 hours with a nurse leader
preceptor to fully complete each of these assignments. This requirement is in place to optimize
your preceptor experience and to allow you to immerse yourself into the role of a nurse leader.
Begin identifying the nurse leaders with whom you plan to work. You do not need to work with
the same nurse leader for each assignment.

MSN Program
Capstone Project Guidance
While pursuing the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Leadership and Management for
Health Systems program at Strayer University, you have focused on various aspects of nursing
and healthcare leadership and management. In this course, you will have the opportunity to
synthesize and apply your learning by developing a capstone project. The capstone project is a
culminating project that students to draw upon knowledge and skills gleaned from courses
completed throughout the master’s program. Students will apply their learning to impact change
regarding an identified real-world problem within a healthcare facility of their choice. The
Capstone Project is intended to demonstrate competency in one or more of the American
Organization for Nurse Executive (AONE) Competencies and achievement of the AACN
Master’s Essentials.
The Capstone Project is a scholarly project that reflects an area of interest among nurse leaders
and that is critical to nursing and healthcare. Students will be required to lead implementation of
a change initiative within a healthcare organization that is supported by evidence.
In collaboration with a preceptor, students will select an area of interest as the focus of the
capstone project. Your proposed project must be focused on nursing and healthcare leadership
and/or management and focused on the business of healthcare (operations) and/or healthcare
delivery (clinical outcomes).
Examples of changes that students might consider proposing are:
1.) Present a new business idea for the healthcare organization that you are completing
your practicum experience with. You may use your previously developed business plan
and tailor it to your current facility (if different from the one you initially developed it for).
2.) Propose a policy change that supports quality, safety, or cost containment.
3.) Revise a strategic plan or section of a strategic plan, based on a new identified need.
4.) Propose a change to or expansion of a service offered by the facility/organization.
5.) Propose a change to an established organizational process/procedure.
6.) Propose a change to an organization’s or department’s structure/function.
7.) Propose the addition or deletion of a position, program, or department.

Students should consider how coursework completed throughout the program might contribute
to and/or inform their choice of a capstone project. Students may choose to continue or resume
work from a previously completed course. Below is a list of assignments designated by course
that might inform students’ choice of a capstone project focus. This list is provided as a
guideline and is not exhaustive, nor are students required to select a project based on the
assignments listed.
Regardless of the student’s choice of a capstone project’s focus, it must meet five standard
requirements. The project must be (1) substantive (Master’s level, as determined by the course
faculty), (2) scholarly (informed by evidence), (3) propose a change; and (4) demonstrate
competence in one or more American Organization for Nurse Executives (AONE)
Competencies, and (5) demonstrate alignment with the AACN Master’s Essentials
.
